Shifty is the excellent debut movie from director Eran Creevy. It follows a pivotal day and night in the life of the eponymous young London drug-dealer (Riz Ahmed) in Dudlowe (read: Harlow). The film opens with the arrival of Chris (Daniel Mays), Shifty's 'best mate' who mysteriously hoofed it to Manchester four years ago and has not been back since - till now. Shifty, now living with his brother Rez (Nitin Ganatra) after being thrown out by his parents, welcomes him with open arms. However, it's clear that there are unresolved feelings about Chris's sudden departure. Chris not has a proper job, mortgage etc - so why is the respectable Rez so obviously not ... Shifty is a low budget (£100,000), lottery funded gritty drama focusing on 24 hours in the life of Shifty, a young muslim drug dealer in London. Without focusing too much on the plot, I will mention that the main triggers within this movie (of which there are a few) are the arrival back to town of Shifty's friend Chris after 4 years, Shifty's tenuous relationship with his family, a 'rival' dealer, and a drug crazed and desperate customer. This is a debut movie by director Eran Creevy, yet feels like a more experienced film.
