Advantages: Good film.
Disadvantages: Too Confusing.
This film was recommended to me last night and I decided to take his advice. Due to my nan going into hospital next week for a hip op, this was our last DVD day (I end college early), so I wanted to get something decent, so I choose Shooter.
The Plot
Bob Lee Swagger is an ex-marine gunnery sergeant who after his best friend is killed on a peace mission, was left by the American government to find his own way to safety. Cut to three years later and Swagger is now living in Wyoming, with his dog Sam and his collection of guns.
When the FBI come calling for help to save the President, Swagger's patriotisms kick in and he's in Washington within a heartbeat to work out how a shot can be made from a certain distance, and where that person would take the shot. Swagger however at the last minute discovers he's been set up, and gets shot twice in the body, but still manages to escape.
The rest of the movie entails Swagger trying to dodge the people that got him into trouble in the first place and the authorities whilst trying to clear his name.
The Cast
Mark Wahlberg- Bob Lee Swagger
I was actually surprised. I think the last film I saw with Mark Wahlberg in was probably Rock Star, I'm not a big fan as I've not seen that much versatility from him and still think he's pretty much the same in every role. I've only probably seen three films with him in, Rock Star, Planet of The Apes and Fear and he's always the same brooding kind of man that always gets the girl, wins the fight, blah, blah, blah. You get the jist. However I was surprised in this film, I forgot it was Wahlberg and he delivered an ok performance.
Michael Pena
Never heard of this guy before and looking back at his biography, he's not done a lot of work I've heard off, but has still made a good name in Hollywood. He however wasn't good enough to take the shine away from Wahlberg, as most 'newbie' actors tend to do. (For example: Blood Diamond, DiCaprio was out staged by Hounsou)
Danny Glover
Does this guy ever not play a cop of some sort. Looking at his biography I'm amazed that the first Lethal Weapon film came out in 1987, he hasn't aged a bit. Unlike Lethal Weapon, Glover plays the baddy in this film. He's the guy that contracts Swagger into working out who wants to the kill the President and is the one that managed to trick him. I think I compared his acting in this film to Lethal Weapon a bit too much. I adore LW and think that Glover will always be Sergeant Murtaugh to me.
The Storyline
We struggled to keep up, the plot doesn't always make sense and I found my finger always pressed on the re-wind button as if you blink you miss things. It was too fast, the action was great and if you are prepared to sit there and only understand half of the storyline that's good, but if like me you want to understand every little bit this isn't the film for you.
President/Prime Minister
I don't know if the shots that were taken in this film were actually possible, and was quite shocked when I saw it happening. You see the President making speeches, stupid speeches, but speeches all the same, is that actually possible? For some reason that sort of shocked me.
Anything Else
I'm amazed that there's actually not much else to write about the film. It's worth seeing but it's definetley not by far the best thing I've ever seen. It just goes to show that the American government is not all it seems to be, especially the opening sequence when they just left there men out there to deal on there own.
It was an eye opener, but looking back now, I think they could have done better. It was just all a bit too easy, in my opinion none of what he did was possible. Watch it and you'll see what I mean.
HDTV
No difference to normal TV in my opinion, HD TV is a waste of time so are the DVD players. Expensive but not much difference.
