Advantages: good action film
Disadvantages: -
Over the Easter weekend I had more free time to watch films and just relax. I only ended up watching a few but of the ones I did watch I did enjoy. The second film that weekend that I decided to watch was 'Shooter'. I had briefly heard of this in the past but I had not really ever thought about going to see it at the cinema as I never really heard much feedback on it. I didn't ever really know what it was about either so that was probably my reason for not going to see it but again my friend passed on the DVD to me once they were finished with it and when it is handed to me I usually watch a film as they said it was good.
Bob Lee Swagger (Mark Wahlberg) is a marine sniper and at the beginning it shows us him in action but he is on a mission which goes wrong which sends him to retire. He was a sniper when a marine and was one of the most accurate with his shot that he never missed a target. For 3 years he hides up in his mountain home in Wyoming with his dog keeping out of the way of things but is soon found by Colonel Isaac Johnson (Danny Glover) and some other agents. He comes to him to tell him to track down a presidential assassin who is planning on shooting the President from three potential areas and they have come to Swagger to find out if it would be possible to shoot him from these points.
On the day that this project is being carried out a gun shot is fired but it kills the Ethiopian archbishop instead and Swagger soon realises that he has been framed for this. The agents tell everyone that Swagger is the shooter, so soon he is on the run from the police and everyone who is after him. He has to go back to how he used to be and use his military skills to outsmart those after him and to survive until the truth is heard.
I have to say having being someone who hadn't heard anything about this film, I really enjoyed it. I picked yet another action film but it was yet another one which was done well. There were lots of great action scenes in this film and the plot all fit together well so that everything made sense. It wasn't too complex a plot but was good enough and although this kind of thing has been done before about being framed for killings the characters I think were what made this film more likeable.
Mark Wahlberg is an actor who is well known but who I personally have only really seen in 'The Italian Job' and he was great in that. He is good in action films and even in this film as a military man he was great, he had the action scenes perfected and was the right choice but he also showed a caring side and that made him likeable for the sense there was more to the character than just being a sniper and that he had learned a lot and Wahlberg portrayed all of this through his acting. Kate Mara was also great in the part of the grieving widow, she looked familiar but I couldn't think what I had seen her in. She was right for the part and although upset she was another strong character that really made the plot as well even if it wasn't obvious.
With 'Shooter' it passed quickly, although there were many times I thought it was going to end but yet more things happened. It tied up everything at the end which I was happy about and even though the ending was kind of predictable in a way I knew what would happen but not exactly how. This is definitely a film for action lovers or Mark Wahlberg fans; if you like these government types of films with corrupt agents then this is the film for you.
If you are interested in purchasing this film on DVD then you can do online or even look for an offer on eBay. It is £4.98 on Amazon with postage on top of this cost and on Play.com it is £4.99 with free delivery.
The DVD contains the features of an Interactive Menu, different languages and audio choices. It doesn't have any real special features which is a disappointment.
