Shortbus (DVD) ... at Universal Pictures Video / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, PAL / In his aim to make an honest film about sex, John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig and the Angry Inch) has taken a somewhat documentary approach to Shortbus, a film describing various New Yorkers' sexual pathos. Framed by shots roving a homemade diorama of the city, Shortbus is comprised of vignettes featuring actors who helped craft this story of people's disconnect in sexual endeavors. Jamie (PJ DeBoy) and James (Paul Dawson), a gay couple experiencing a lull in their relationship, visit Sophia (Sook-Yin Lee), a sex therapist whose inability to orgasm results in her clients inviting her to a sex club after which the film is titled. Sophia's husband, Rob (Raphael Barker), is also willing to experiment, so the two independently embark on adventures in self-pleasure. Dominatrix Severin (Lindsay Beamish) plays a crucial role in Sophia and Rob's lives, as her search for real humanity overlaps with their desire for passion. As each character's plot complicates, the viewer sees a similar melancholy bulldozing its way into these seemingly disparate lives. The depression is repeatedly used in comedic scenes, such as when James is asked on a date while still hospitalised for his attempted suicide. Yo La Tengo's score, which includes Animal Collective among others, lends this film a graceful ambience. Unlike porn, Shortbus has a resonance that encourages the viewer to consider one's own sex life as an important aspect of happiness. --Trinie Dalton

In other words, the way that they present sex is utterly dependent on the notion of a shockable and rather immature public. Though they champion tolerance, the framework by which they do so is set by the shocked, the repressed and the intolerant. The triumph of Shortbus is that it manages to negotiate this difficult crux successfully. Though there are plenty of hot, naked people in i...more

Premium Review Shortbus (DVD): Get on the shortbus for a hedonistic ride (736 words)

It's surprising how many people register discomfort with sex in the cinema. Next time you're bored in a big Hollywood picture and a sex scene starts, take a look at the number of people who start to giggle, cough, talk, fiddle with their mobiles or simply look the other way. It's as if people cease to be viewers and start to perform, acting out a (perhaps part-subconscious) drama of insecurity and anxiety in response to the spectacle of sex onscreen. It's not as if they're seeing anything they haven't seen before (especially these days, with all-pervasive internet porn), oh no. What they're responding to is the confusion of witnessing (what is culturally coded as) an ...

‘Shortbus’ is the latest movie to proclaim to be the ‘most sexually explicit film to go on general release’, the dust cover proudly confirming that boast. Its another one of those arty low budget jobs that has sneaked the ‘money shot’ pass the censor by claiming ‘Art House’ status under the new liberal British censorship rules, guaranteed to shift a an extra hundred thousand copies off the back of if the producer succeeds. I think you can visualize the pubescent boys and unemployed men shuffling out of Blockbusters with one tucked under their arm in a brown paper bag with no illusions why they are renting it. Oh, and lets not forget those renters who want to see it for ’ ...

Crowned Review Shortbus (DVD): Knobs & Knockers (1211 words)

Just where to start with a movie like Shortbus, in the words of Maria "To start at the very beginning, is a very good place to start" but with Shortbus it's difficult to tell where to begin. Probably the best place to start is with a warning, 9 Songs and Intimacy came out upon world markets with warnings about being the most sexually explicit movies ever released, Shortbus was released without anyone even batting an eyelid and from a sexual point of view it's the most graphic "legal" movie I have ever seen; as the movie progresses you will see a variety of sexual orientations climax in a variety of ways. Shortbus's director John Cameron ...
