I am writing this review in complete and utter defence of 'Showgirls'. I'm a big fan of Paul Verhoven, and like most of his films, this can be enjoyed either as a satire on American society, or as a piece of visceral, trashy, 70's style exploitation cinema. The critics' knives were really out for this film on its original release, and although it is now enjoying some success as a camp icon type film, I don't feel that it has ever received the recognition it truly deserves. Oh God. Yes I know Mr. Verhoeven is known for his tongue in cheek affairs but tongue in cheek or otherwise Showgirls is a bloody awful movie. Teaming up with the consistently crap(but consistently earning huge wage packets!) Joe Eszterhas whose other works of pure shite have included other supposed erotic tripe such as "Sliver" and "Jade", the pair propose to offer us a glimpse into the titilating world of Vegas strip clubs and clip joints. Showgirls is film about some showgirls in Las Vegas who do dance shows in scantily clad costumes. The plot revolves around Nomi (Elizabeth Berkley), a young girl who seeks fame and fortune in the dance shows of Las Vegas. She's starts at a strip club called Cheetahs, before moving on to the Stardust chorus line. She is helped on her way by her friend and costume designer Molly.
