Advantages: Great Animation

When I first heard about Shrek I was unsure whether I would enjoy it or not because it looked as if it was aimed at a younger age group. I eventually came to the situation where I could watch it and make up my own mind. I was pleasantly surprised. The story is about an ogre called Shrek (voice of Mike Myers) who lives in a swamp. The problem is that the nasty Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow) rids his kingdom of fairytale people and sends them to Shreks swamp. Shrek is angered by this and decides to confront Lord Farquaad but end up making a deal. If Shrek saves the lovely Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz) from the evil dragon and delivers her to Lord Farquaad then his swamp will be rid of Fairytale creatures. Shrek takes up this challenge and sets off with a donkey in tow (Eddie Murphy). This film is pure entertainment for younger and older generations. Contained in the plot are a lot of jokes that young kids would laugh at but wouldn’t get the real meaning. This makes it interesting for adults too. Of the funniest things in the movie is the relationship between Shrek and Donkey. They argue and fight and fall out but always manage to do it in a funny way. Eddie Murphy’s voice completes donkeys’ character perfectly and makes him a very funny addition to the cast. Princess Fiona who’s voice is given by Cameron Diaz and she too adds to the laughs. A fairytale story where the princess burps! Lord Farquaad has many jokes made about him because he is so short. The voices all match the animated bodies perfectly. The animation created in this film is incredible. The variety of different characters that have been developed and animated is quite a feat. The animation is smooth and fluent letting you believe that the characters are real in their own little world. The colours are bright and vibrant adding to the atmosphere. All in all it is an animation masterpiece to rival Toy Story. This is a really good film for young a
nd old. I would recommend that if you get a chance to see this movie you grab it because it certainly is worth a look.

- 08/01/02 I enjoyed your review.
Incident ally, a film critic on the radio suggested this morning that Shrek was an interesting outside bet for Best Picture Oscar.
He also suggested that would put a lot of Hollywood noses out of joint!
