Despite the unusual and confusing title of this film, it is a comical drama extraordinaire.

It tells the tale of a young working class man making a desperate attempt to break into the elite circle of New York's upper class socialites. The story is central to a middle-aged, super-rich, married couple living in the posh suburbs of the city who deal in exclusive fine art for a living.

Will Smith's oscar-nominated performance as the main character is superb and definitely worthy of an award. In "Six Degrees", he gives us a refreshingly different perspective of himself in his charming, devious role, as opposed to his "heroic" image he has portrayed since in the all-action, blockbuster films, "Independance Day" and "Men in Black".

Top Hollywood veterans, Stockard Channing and Donald Sutherland add their own talented charisma to the excellence of this film as the rich couple who allow the cleverly-disguised imposter (Smith) into their lives. He has learnt everything he needs to know to impress them; about their family, fine art appreciation, history of art and even tales from an imaginary life where he is the son of Sydney Poitier and so on. The depth of his imagination and false personality is captivating to both the audience and to the screen couple (Channing and Sutherland). So much so that they become totally absorbed in the magic and magnitude of it all.

The comic moments are precious and scattered evenly amongst the film, along with a few unexpected shock factors and suprising twists of events as the tale unfolds. I will not go into any detail of these, as even giving the jist of them may ruin a prospective audience's enjoyment.

The storyline draws to a close as Channing and Sutherland describe the sequence of events to friends throughout the whole film and we are suddenly drawn back to the opening scenes of the film by the use of chronological trickery. As the
truth finally emerges, everything is no longer what it seems.

"Six Degrees of Separation" is a classy, entertaining film which definitely isn't what it appears to be on the surface. It really draws the audience into its magic. Incorporated within, is a thought-provoking fable and it will leave you wondering why you have not seen this film before now. And if you are puzzled as to why the title of the film has been named so, you'll just have to watch and find out for yourselves.

My flatmate saw this on TV a couple of weeks back and totally raved about it. I like the theory as well, although it's kind of scary!

This has to be one of the best films that Smith has done, I have seen it a couple times now and I think it is an excellent film. Good op!
