Sleeper (DVD)

Description: Genre: Comedy / Theatrical Release: 1973 / Director: Woody Allen / Actors: Woody Allen, Diane Keaton ... / DVD released ... more
Sleeper (DVD) ... 19 February, 2001 at MGM Entertainment / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, Dubbed, PAL, Widescreen / If Interiors was Woody Allen's Bergman movie, and Stardust Memories was his Fellini movie, then you could say that Sleeper is his Buster Keaton movie. Relying more on visual/conceptual/slapstick gags than his trademark verbal wit, Sleeper is probably the funniest of what would become known as Allen's "early, funny films" and a milestone in his development as a director. Allen plays Miles Monroe, cryogenically frozen in 1973 (he went into the hospital for an ulcer operation) and thawed 200 years later. Society has become a sterile, Big Brother-controlled dystopia, and Miles joins the underground resistance--joined by a pampered rich woman (Diane Keaton at her bubbliest). Among the most famous gags are Miles' attempt to impersonate a domestic-servant robot; the Orgasmatron, a futuristic home appliance that provides instant pleasure; a McDonald's sign boasting how many trillions the chain has served; and an inflatable suit that provides the means for a quick getaway. The kooky thawing scenes were later blatantly (and admittedly) ripped off by Mike Myers in Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery. --Jim Emerson

However, the government soon catch a whiff of trouble, and arrest most of the resistance members, aside from Miles, who disguises himself as a robot, and works as the servant of Luna Schlosser (Diane Keaton). However, she soon enough realises what's going on, and s...more

Crowned Review Sleeper (DVD): "Woody Allen takes a nostalgic look at the future!" (909 words)
by - written on 02/10/07 (Very useful, 221 readings)
Rating:

Sleeper is a 1973 comedy by Woody Allen and one of the last of his free-wheeling 'early funny ones'. In the early seventies Allen came up with an idea for a three hour film. The first half would be a New York comedy set in the present day. After an intermission, Allen's character would be frozen and wake in the future. The idea was rejected by the Studio but they asked him instead to make the second half of his proposed project, a comedy with a futuristic setting and sci-fi element. The end result was Sleeper. Allen plays Miles Monroe. Monroe is a typical early Woody Allen character; nebbish, cowardly, neurotic and very funny. Cyrogenically frozen after a ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Allen does slapstick (327 words)

Rating:

note: also appears in part on Flixster and The Student Room Woody Allen is most widely known for his observational romance comedies such as Annie Hall and Manhattan, but in the 1970s, he also forayed into some more adventurous fare, particularly the slapstick genre (which is incredibly difficult to pull off well, no matter who you are!), with his 1973 acclaimed comedy Sleeper. If there's anyone that can pull it off, it's Allen, and boy, does he... Premium Review Sleeper (DVD): I call that a cosmic screwing! (937 words)
by - written on 23/04/09 (Very useful, 81 readings)
Rating:

This is a review of the dvd. 'Sleeper' is Woody Allen's 7th film as director, but is probably the first time his skills as writer/director/performer came together perfectly. Some of his previous films including 'Bananas' and 'Take The Money And Run' had some great moments, but appear slightly patchy compared with this. Miles Monroe [Woody Allen] is thawed out in 2173 after being cryogenically frozen in 1973 after a routine ulcer operation went wrong, and he slipped into a coma. He is thawed out by scientists who want Miles to infiltrate the 'underground' organisation and find out about something called the 'Aries' project, which has something to do ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Woody Allen's finest hour. (498 words)
by - written on 16/04/09 (Very useful, 72 readings)
Rating:

Woody Allen plays the part of Miles Monroe, a down-trodden chemist from 1973, who has been involved in an accident which necessitated him being frozen for 200 years. He is now woken and has to come to terms with his new surroundings, the huge technological advances of the last 200 years and the changes in people. These are all too much for him and he struggles to cope. Additionally he becomes involved in a rebel plot to oust the ruling government. He is in deep - way above his head! During his adventure he wins over Luna, a female hostage he is forced to take, played very well by Diane Keaton. Initially very scared by her captor's strange ways she comes to ...  Read the complete review
