Sliding Doors is a movie which shows that one simple split-second thing can change your life drastically, leading you down one path rather than another. The film stars Gwyneth Paltrow as Helen. After leaving work to catch a train back to her apartment, her life splits into two: a) She catches the train, to find that her boyfriend is in her apartment, having an affair with another lady. b) She misses the train, where her normal life continues, while her boyfriend cheats on her without her finding out. Her missing the train is caused by a young child getting in her way, slowing her down by less than a second, whereas in scenario a)she [gently] pushes the child out of her way, giving her that small but extra time to get to the train. This split-second thing has a massive effect on her life, and from then we watch the movie in two different stories. I thought this was a great idea, and was very interesting to watch. However, I was somewhat confused in parts, but confusion is reduced because in one version of her life, she re-styles her hair, making it easier to see which life you are watching. The story keeps you thinking all the way through. The film is funny in parts and is described as a romantic comedy. For me, it wasn't a movie I could relax to and just sit back and watch, as I spent much time throughout it rapidly thinking, to see if everything worked (if you know what I mean), but after you've seen it once, you spend less time racking your brain in this manner. I enjoyed the film, and think most people will be entertained by it and hopefully not annoyed where the stories skip from one to the other. It's definitely original and one to watch.

- 03/11/01 I think this is a really good opinion. You have told me enough about the film for me to decide whether I want to watch it, without giving too much of the plot away. |
