When androids gain emotions
Member Name: tlmartin
Advantages: A futuristic view of a post apocalyptic world
Disadvantages: There is no sequel
This is a movie I remember watching many many years ago, so when I got chance to watch it tonight I took it. I love revisiting old classics. This movie is a typical late 80's movie bringing together a good story line, emotions, deeper meanings and sci-fi.
The movie is one of the latter few movies that Mark Hamill did before his accident, which caused him to have a lot of reconstructive surgery and made him only do voice over parts for video games. It is also one of the many movies that Bill Paxton has done through his above average career.
Story (May contain spoilers)
In the distant future the Earth has been devastated by natural disasters, earthquake, floods, etc. The people believe technology is what caused these disasters, so now they shun it. The people live in little pockets all around the Earth in canyons to protect them from the Slipstream, violent winds flowing over the surface of the Earth. The only way to travel now is by plane.
Mark Hamill plays Will a law enforcer tracking down a killer. This killer is no ordinary killer though he is an android. When Will manages to catch him along the route he stops where the Android is captured by Matt, a rogue type person always looking for the big break. Now comes the main story. Matt wants to take the Android in for the bounty so he can open a balloon shop. Will wants to get his Android back for the bounty, especially as he spent a few months tracking him down.
Now starts the main adventure of the movie as Matt and the Android, Byron, start to develop a friendship, and Matt no longer views him as someone who killed for evil reasons. Along the way they bump into a few communities whom have ulterior motives for the two of them, as well as them having to be on the watch out for Will being on their tail.
Byron the android is on his own mission of trying to become more human, and this journey helps him discover his potential, as well as emotion.
This movie is definitely a classic. It was just as good watching it now as it was when I was younger. No special effects were needed, it just had an excellent story playing on a post apocalyptic world, mixed with blade runner, mixed with a typical bounty hunter movie. It is awesome!
I love how you initial start disliking the android thinking he is a killer, but as time goes on you actually don't understand how he would kill, to understanding the requirements that would need to happen to make this android kill. The discovery of emotion, and the realisation of the android and his reactions as he gains those emotions.
It is also good how you start with a typical rogue, who looks a bit like he would screw anyone over, yet he is the one who ends up helping this android evolve, as well as learning more about himself.
I thoroughly recommend watching this movie, if you see it cheap online buy it, or go out of your way to watch it on sky if it's ever on.
Summary: This movie rocks and will trow you emotionally throughout
