Advantages: Nice for Friday-night cuddles!
Disadvantages: You've probably seen it all before
Slumdog Millionaire marks a bit of a diversion for British Director Danny Boyle. We know he does edgy (Trainspotting - it doesn't get any edgier!) and we know he does horror with the best of them (28 Days Later still scares the heck out of me every time) so how does he cope with this comic love story?
Well, I'm guessing you all know the story by now. Slumdog centres around an orphan's rise from poverty to escape his roots in the slums of India and his attempt to win both the love of his life and India's version of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire". I won't spoil anyone's entertainment by saying too much more about what happens.
Despite the plaudits and numerous awards I didn't really get into this film. Sure it has its moments - it's sentimental and romantic and the setting is quite unique but I've seen it all before elsewhere. Quite why it has been so acclaimed kinda bemuses me, but that's just my humble opinion.
If you're stuck for something to rent from your local video store, especially if you're having a slushy Friday night in with your nearest and dearest, you could do a lot worse.
Summary: You could do worse

- 01/06/09 Comic? This film wasn't comic in the slightest! And I can't say that I've seen anything else like it which is why it was so popular because nothing had been done like it before x |
