Having a bit of a nostalgia trip at the moment, I have started to dig out some of my old films that I haven't seen in years. Small Soldiers is the latest in a long line of favourites that I have rediscovered. When a big Global Conglomerate buys out an ailing toy firm, the staff are charged with developing live-action toys that can play back with the kids who are toying with them. But one eager worker goes a step too far when he adds an AI chip to one paticular range known as the Comando Elite because this chip was originally designed with defense implications and soon causes the toys to go on the rampage! Small Soldiers is not normally the type of film that I would watch, since it's often tagged as "a kid's film". Much of this is lazy labelling from marketing types, since Small Soldiers is more of a kindred spirit to films like The Goonies - a "family film" which actually has much wider appeal. The Story sees a range of new toys (the Elite Commando Squad and the monster-like Gorgonites) on the loose in a small American town. Equipped with highly advanced chips, these two sets of toys (and mortal enemies) have the ability to move independently, to think and to learn.
