So, after the cult success of the brilliant Dead Mans Shoes and solid rental returns for This is England, British director Shane Meadows returns with Somers Town, this a little treat from his backers who have given him some money to indulge in his passion - short films, Somers Town just 68 minutes long. Originally this commission was supposed to be a publicity film for the new Eurostar service from the refurbished St Pancreas Station and they wanted Meadows to do some sort of infomercial. But he didn't fancy making shorts about kids and families waving on trains and so walked away. But when his life long writing buddy Paul Frazer had another idea of a script around the ... Somers Town is another masterpiece by British director Shane Meadows. Those familiar with Meadows work will be instantly drawn to this small independent picture filmed around London. Starkly filmed in black and white, Somers Town features all the directors' trademarks, most notably the clever, witty and half-improvised script. It also features some top class British acting talent, not necessarily actors you may know, but ones who are believable in the roles that they play. Thomas Turgoose is again excellent here as he was in 'This is England'. Here he plays Tomo, a young man who comes to London to start a new life. Originally from the Midlands, he ... ~~~~ Somers Town ~~~~ This short British Film was released on the 22nd August 2008. It was written by Paul Fraser who has also produced Scummy Man, Elshera, Dead Man's Shoes & Heartlands as well as several other British based films. Shane Meadows, director of this film, is probably more famous for directing This is England, in which Thomas Turgoose also stars. Meadows is known for his love of directing low budget films set in England (usually the Midlands) and this film, Somers Town, reflects his talents in great form. **** Running Time - 68 mins **** **** Genre - comedy / drama **** **** Cert - 12A **** **** Lang - ... Somers Town was directed by Shane Meadows ( who also directed This Is England) and written by Paul Fraser. It is set in Somers Town, a suburb in central London (which really does exist) and follows the adventures of two teenagers from differing backgrounds who meet by chance. Tomo (Thomas Turgoose) has ran away from the Midlands after an unhappy family life and Marek (Piotr Jagiello) is a Polish immigrant living with his father who drinks too much and doesn't have a lot of time for his son. The two boys strike up a friendship after Tommo is mugged by some hoodies and Marek grows tired of his dad's preference for the company of his mates from ... Read the complete review
