Rachael is a thirty year old single lawyer in New York city. After getting a few drinks with her college friend Dex, who is also her best friend Darcy's fiancÚ she ends up in the same bed as him the next morning. It turns out that Rachael had a crush on Dex at law school which Dex was not aware of. Ethan is a childhood friend of both Rachael and Darcy although Darcy doesn't like Ethan very much and Ethan isn't fond of Darcy either. As the wedding approaches each character finds out more about themselves and what they truly want from life.
After seeing the trailer I really wanted to see the film. I am a fan of Ginnifer Goodwin after seeing her in He's Just Not that into you and Big Love.
Darcy is a very fun an energetic character that seemed to make up most of the energy in the film. I also felt that she was very immature at times and she did seem to be very selfish. This is seen when she interrupts Rachael and Dex when they are having drinks to celebrate the end of their exams 6 years ago. She must have known that Rachael likes Dex more than just a friend because Rachael and Darcy are best friends. She even says to Dex that Rachael talks about him all the time and that he should ask Rachael out on a real date. After he pauses she tells him to ask her out on a date. This is why I think that she is selfish and she isn't really a friend at all. There are other things that she does in the film that are very selfish and not at all what I would expect a best friend to do. I think that it was really Darcy who stole Dex from Rachael. I didn't like the character at all. She was fun and energetic but she doesn't think of others. She says to Rachael that she would never let anyone hurt her. I have seen Hudson in other films before and this is the first one where she was playing such an upbeat and party loving character.
Rachael is very passive and throughout most of the film she was very much a push over. She would let Darcy dictate the terms of their friendship. She is very different to Darcy as she is more sensible, smart, hardworking and loyal. I find it hard to see how Darcy and Rachael are friends as they are such polar opposites. The relationship that Rachael and Darcy have isn't very believable in my opinion. The characters didn't gel together very well and I was not convinced of them being best friends. I couldn't see how this was possible. Rachael didn't tell Dex that she liked him 6 years ago yet when her best friend is only 2 months from marrying him she decides to tell him that she used to have a crush on him. I thought that this was really weird, why had she waited so long to say this? Also Dex looked as though he liked her. The fact that she sleeps with Dex despite him about to marry his best friend shows that she is not totally innocent and sweet. She however lacks the ability to stand up for herself and she doesn't see the way that Darcy treats her as wrong. Ginnifer Goodwin has starred in He is Just Not That Into You and Big Love. Her character here is different to that she plays in her other roles as she smart and very reserved whereas in her other roles she has been very bubbly and fun. I think that it was good to see her play a different role.
I don't really understand Dex because he proposes to Rachael's friend yet he says he loves her. He also had plenty of time to change his mind and he could have asked Rachael out on the date and not Darcy, who he hardly knew. He has a similar personality to Rachael so I find it hard to understand what he sees in Darcy. I think that he probably likes the fun and playful part of Darcy but they seem more like friends than partners. Colin Egglesfield who plays Dex is a new actor to me as I haven't seen him in any films and given that there are big names in this film I was a little surprised that he was given the leading role.
I liked the speed and pace of the plot. There was a danger of the film becoming long and tiring but it was paced well and there wasn't large irrelevant scenes which I have found some romcoms do to fill time. The film hits with the ground running and there are snippet scenes of the past shown rather than having a long beginning with all the non essential details.
I loved the soundtrack to this film by Natasha Bedingfield. The song is called Little too Much. Her songs seem to be very popular in films as Pocket full of Sunshine is the soundtrack to Easy A and Strip me is the soundtrack for Morning Glory.
Overall this was a very light melodrama that was easy to watch. I would highly recommend that those who like romcoms. I would think that this film is geared towards women more than men as I watched this with my brother and he thought it was really boring.
