Advantages: Fresh look at the plot of a rom-com

Disadvantages: Can't think of any!

Something Borrowed has to be one of the best films of it's genre this year. It was released in the cinema early in 2011 and it's dvd release was 29th August 2011. This review is solely on the film-and boy, what an excellent film it is!

The cast features Kate Hudson, a favourite of many rom-com fans and then some more minor, but equally as talented cast members such as Ginnifer Goodwin who was made famous for appearing as polygamist wife in the hit American sit com 'Big Love'. The cast also features the extremely hansome Colin Eggelsfield and the funny John Krasinski.

The plot itself follows Rachel (Goodwin), a young lawyer who's just turned 30. Rachel is loyal, quiet and pretty. Her lifetime bestfriend Darcy (Hudson) is the opposite, she's lary and the life and soul of the party who enjoys living her quite shallow exsistance. The two women have been best friends since childhood and it's the time they have been in each other's lives that binds them together, as sisters in all but blood. During numerous flash backs we realise that Dex (Eggelsfield) is the true love of Rachels life, dating way back from their time at college. But Rachel and Dex, both too shy to tell the other one how they truly felt spent years dodging the subject until a misunderstood conversation made Dex think his feelings for Rachel weren't reciprocated. So when wild and fun Darcy shows up to visit Rachel at college Dex thinks Rachel has set him with her best friend. Falling in love with her vibrancy, and her spirit Dex and Darcy begin a relationship and after ime become engaged to be married. All the while shy and quiet Rachel is in the background hiding her feelings for Dex and supressing her dreams of a life with him herself. Darcy throws Rachel a 30th birthday party and in true Darcy style she gets drunk and embarrasses herself. Dependable Dex puts his wife-to-be to bed before returning for her lost handbag. Over a few intimate drinks to celebrate her 30th, Rachel blurts out she had a crush on Dex in college. The look on his face says it all, his heart skips a beat....as far as my review on the plot goes, that is the build up-not a spoiler for all this happens in the first 20 minutes and you will have to watch this film to see how the love triangle unfolds and develops!

But as the line 'Their is A Thin Line Between Love and Friendship' says this film will fill you with hope that true love truly does exsist, and that some people do get their happy every after.

As far as rom-com's go, I'm a huge fan! I've dreamt of happy ever after's since I was a little girl but as I've got older, and sadly no longer in the teenage frame of mind regarding love (oh how wonderful when everything seemed possible hey?!). I've realised with time that love and relationships are never black and white, they are never simple and unless you fight for your happy ending then it will probably pass you by. I've also learnt through my own mistakes and from others mistakes that if you live in a world where you have two sides 'black' and 'white' then your living in a dream world because in reality the inbetween is grey, in numerous shades. The lines are always blurred in love, in truth their are none really. Most rom-com's show a tell tale plot following guy and girl who fall in love, face a difficulty or seperation and end up together living happily ever after. What I like about this film is it's ability to show the truth of many 'true love' situations. Does loving two people make you wrong? Does meeting that one person who completes you, while you are in a relationship with someone else make you wrong? If your answers to this are 'yes' well, your living under a rock. Life and love is not simple and far from condoning cheating, for I would never condone this, I am merely saying it happens. A lot of the time it's for the wrong reasons and I accept that, but sometimes it's for the right reasons. And meeting under those circumstances does not mean the relationship is doomed to failure; some of the strongest, most loved up couples I know have met under difficult circumstances but who are we to refuse our own needs? In reality not many of us would, so this film shows that side of things in a light hearted funny way. It shows what it's like when faced with the question of the follow your heart of be selfish with love...

This film is deffinately worth a watch if you need a little boost in believing in love, or if you've ever been cheated on or even have cheated on someone. It's so refreshing to watch a 'real' plot in this genre because they are usually all too similar!

The film itself is 112 minutes long and is rated at a 12 rating as their is not a lot of bad language or sexuality in this film although a minor reference to drugs mid way through. It's an easy watch as far as it's funny and will deffinately get your laughing but it will also having you hiding behind a cushion in frustration! It's got something for all you rom-com lovers out there!

On the flip side though, if you don't like films about love and are the love 'scrooge' of your family, probably best to avoid it, unless secretly you like heart felt films! This one will definately leave you thinking about love.

Summary: Absolutely fabulous!
