South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (DVD)

Description: Genre: Television - South Park / Theatrical Release: 1999 / Director: Trey Parker / Actors: Deborah Adair, Mary Kay ... more
South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (DVD) ... Bergman ... / DVD released 23 November, 1999 at Paramount / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, Animated, Closed-captioned, Colour, Dolby, DVD-Video, NTSC, Widescreen / OK, let's get all the disclaimers out of the way first. Despite its colourful (if crude) animation, South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut is in no way meant for kids. It is chock full of profanity that might even make Quentin Tarantino blanch and has blasphemous references to God, Satan, Saddam Hussein (who's sleeping with Satan, literally) and Canada. It's rife with scatological humour, suggestive sexual situations, political incorrectness and gleeful, rampant vulgarity. And it's probably one of the most brilliant satires ever made. The plot: flatulent Canadian gross meisters Terrance and Philip hit the big screen and the South Park quartet of third graders--Stan, Kyle, Kenny, and Cartman--begin repeating their profane one-liners ad infinitum. The parents of South Park, led by Kyle's overbearing mom, form "Mothers Against Canada", blaming their neighbours to the north for their children's corruption and taking Terrance and Philip as war prisoners. It's up to the kids then to rescue their heroes from execution, not mention a brooding Satan, who's planning to take over the world. To give away any more of the plot would destroy the fun but this feature-length version of Trey Parker and Matt Stone's Comedy Central hit is a dead-on and hilarious send-up of pop culture. And did we mention it's a musical? From the opening production number "Mountain Town" to the cheerful anti-profanity sing-along "It's Easy, MMM Kay" to Satan's faux-Disney ballad "Up There", Parker (who wrote or cowrote all the songs) brilliantly shoots down every earnest musical from Beauty and the Beast to Les Misérables. And in advocating free speech and satirising well-meaning but misguided parental censorship groups (with a special nod to the MPAA), Bigger, Longer & Uncut hits home against adult paranoia and hypocrisy with a vengeance. And the jokes, while indeed vulgar and gross, are hysterical; we can't repeat them here, especially the lyrics to Terrance and Philip's hit song, but you'll be rolling on the floor. Don't worry, though--to paraphrase Cartman, this movie won't warp your fragile little mind unless you have something against the First Amendment. --Mark Englehart

... judged differently. But the greatest thing about the South Park writers is, they just dont care what people think and thats great. This film is full of bad language, violence and the continuation of bad animation but that makes the show good. The story line for the film is a bit corney but they make it great. The film is hilarious from start to finish and they attempt to find boundries which no other film has crossed. They find this boundries and crush them. Definatly a film for people who love toilet humour and si...more

Premium Review South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (DVD): Ruder, Cruder yet Just As Funny (625 words)
by - written on 11/04/08 (Very useful, 100 readings)
Rating:

South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut is the first feature length South Park film to date. If you're not familiar with the cartoon series, South Park is about four boys who live in a small mountain town in Colorado, and their friends, families and adventures. The show has a cult following, but is not overly popular with everyone, because of its crude content and swearing, and also because one of the main characters (Eric Cartman) is racist and generally offensive to everyone. This has led to people calling the programme itself racist and abusive, but really it is only a few of the characters who are like that, and does not reflect the views of the makers of South ...  Read the complete review

Cashing in, was the phrase that came to mind when I heard that South Park had made a movie. Lets make some more money from this highly popular adult cartoon show and in part that is what the movie does it cashes in and makes more money. If you do not know anything about South Park, here is a brief run down. South Park is an American cartoon set in a small “Hicksville” American mountain town which features the wacky adventures of four boys, Kyle, Stan, Kenny and Eric “Cartman”. Kyle is a little Jewish boy, who has an overpowering mother and faces problems as his culture does not match the American culture. Stan is the more ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (DVD): A very funny film (377 words)

Rating:

This is the first and I presume only feature length South Park there will ever be. Sometimes the transition from small to big screen is an obstacle that can't be overcome but South Park makes it and does it with pure class. This was originally released in 1999 close to the peak in the quality of South Park's television episodes which actually came after the movie so there is no point where you can watch it and feel like it is past its best, unlike say The Simpson's Movie. For anybody who hasn't seen any of the South Park episodes it is very easy to get into because the opening song basically tells you everything you'll really need to know about ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The quiet (but foul mouthed) mountain town (829 words)
by - written on 14/11/08 (Very useful, 118 readings)
Rating:

South Park is the ingenious cartoon series developed by the "warped" Trey Parker, Matt Stone and Pam Brady. The cartoon is based on the residents of the quiet North American mountain town of South Park, where there are weird and strange happenings occurring on a regular basis. Due to the success of the cartoon series it was inevitable that South Park would make it to the silver screen and that eventually happened in 1999 when South Park Bigger, Longer and Uncut was released. There is no half way house with South Park and it is like Marmite. You either "Love it" or "Hate it". Up until I saw this version I loved it, now ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (DVD): South Park: Ruder, Cruder but Quite Funny Actually! (570 words)
by - written on 15/10/08 (Very useful, 117 readings)
Rating:

South Park Bigger Longer and Uncut is exactly what the title says it is! It is simply a episode of the series on television which is longer and ruder. South Park is certainly one of those shows which you either love or hate. I personally think it is hilarious and so the thought of the movie was certainly something I was looking forward to watching and I certainly wasn't disappointed. The movie follows a group of 4 school friends (Eric, Stan, Kenny and Kyle) as they sneak in to see a Terrance and Phillip film called "Asses on Fire" even though they are underage. The film goes on for 3 hours and as they come out they have adopted all the bad language ...  Read the complete review
