Advantages: Great immature comedy.
Disadvantages: Butters isn't in the first few volumes.
I you've watched South Park, you'll know butters is in it, and hence my name being butters because i love the show. However, in this series, butters isn't rally a character you know, but the first volume, i have to say-is still brilliant.
Story and Characters.
*********************
If you have not heard of South Park, it is a quiet (little punkass, trailer trash etc.) mountain town in Colorado USA. It is filled with loveable characters and is just a 2D-ish cartoon with some great stories. In this series, everything imaginable to your mind is just part of everyday life there. Not for anyone who is religious or takes offence easily really, but this series isn't too bad-it is more childish and completely wrong humour rather than taking the mick out of religions and celebrities. I love this volume because it is hilarious and my kind of childish humour.
All of the series (including volume 1 which i am reviewing) revolves around 4 little 8 year old boys.
Kenny-wears an orange jacket which wraps around his face-thereby stopping him from talking without mumbling. Trey and Matt (creators of South Park) are said to have put him in so when he swears-it doesn't have to be bleeped out because of his muffled vooice. Before butters, he used to be my fvourite character. He is the rude one and, although you have to listen out to actually hear what he is saying, it's worth it because he is funny. He dies a lot and comes back.
Kyle-Green hat and orange jacket. He is a Jewish and the creators don't let you forget because Cartman takes it out of him. He gets moody fast but provides some humour.
Cartman-The fat one with a hat with the annoying voice who always gets what he wants because he is spoilt and an only child. Has no dad but is hilarious because he is the noe that comes out with the quick comments and provides the worst (and funnist) jokes.
Stan-Also wears a hat and is quite funny but also serious. Funny.
I love these characters because they are all different and a perfect match because the humour goes well together. I have also noticed that they are really small compared to the adults too. Since they all mesh together, they are funny and as i have said in a previous review-shows an example of how kids are today-knowing more than you think. This is exaggurated though here.
Episodes.
*********
In volume one-
Cartman gets an anal probe-The pilot episode. Aliens come down to South Park and Cartman gets probed up the ass really bad. So bad he ends us letting rip every few minutes-and when he does, fire shots out. The aliens try to communicate with the most intelligent species on earth (cows) and then end up killing loads and kidnapping Ike, Kyle's baby brother. The kids have to try to get Ike back from the aliend and stop Cartman from craooing himself before schoool is over and Kyle gets in trouble off of his parents since his brother went missing.
I think that this is the 2nd best episode in the first volume because it is the one that stated it all off and has the childish humour of how Kenny dies and what the aliens give to the cows as a gift. The humour consists of very childish humour (Cartmans storylin of farting provides the jokes) andsomehow the jokes are still made funny even though they are that childish.
Volcano-The 2nd episode but first best in this volume. Stans uncle and his war friend take the boys hunting. However, due to all of the 'endangered species', they can only kill them if they are about to attack, so whenever so mmuch as a rabbit comes by, the boys have to shout 'thet're coming right at us' before shooting them. At night though, Cartman tells a story of a hideous creature-a scuzzlebutt. it is a creature that lives up in the mountains and loves killing humans. He has Patrich Duffy for a leg, and instead of 2 arms, one of them is normal, whilst the other is a piece of celery. The creature turns out to be real though and when they're trapped on a volcano that is about to erupt and a scuzzlebutt (which turns out to be real), can the guys escape in time. Yes because there is 10 series of south park so far.
This is my favourite episode in the volume because it is once again very funny. This time what makes me laugh is the shooting of the endangered species excusesand the scuzzlebutt story altogether. I love this episode.
Weight Gain 4000-The school teacher Mr. Garrison and his psychotic hand puppet Mr. Hat (thats real) take revenge on Kathie Lee Gifford who is in town to present Cartman with an award for school work. She humiliated him when he was younger and now Garrison wants revenge. It is called Weight Gain 4000 because Cartman tries to bulk up for his award ceremony.
A funny episode due to Cartman thinking he is thin and bulked up and i love psychotic Garrison.
Big Gay Al's Big Gay Boat Ride-Stan finds out his dog Sparky (supposedly voiced by George Clooney) is gay and gets upset. He loses the heart to play in the upcoming football game and Sparky is sad because Stan isn't as happy with him. Big Gay Al thoguh comes to the rescue to tell Sta that it doesn't matter about the dogs sexualtiy.
I love this episode because ofBig Gay Al-being made to look like the 'super-gay' with the Hawain t-shirts, girlish stance and his lisp in his voice. i think it provides some humour and find it amazing that they really haven't took the mick out of gay people too much. I'm not disappointed but the creators of this show don't seem to have a conscience at all.
There are the episodes in the first volume which i find hilarious because they introduce the South Park characters superbly with a lot of variation, along with childish and adult humour at the same time which makes it funnier.
There are a few extras too. There are subtitles for English, French and Netherlands (useful) and a trailer for South Park. You can also select chapters to watch and At the start of every episode, the creators talk about it which i find funny in part but annoying in other.

Now the cartoon itself, beside the stories is also good. The characters are excellent and the actually scenery is also funny. This is because it looks stupid-the lava flow in 'volcano' completely stands out from the rest and looks just like some orange goo flowing down the mountain. When they speak-their mouths move wierd too and some people seem to have a jaw and face seperate rather than a mouth (Canadians). Altogther though-it isn't so bad that it annoys you and adds to the actual episode. The voices though do sometimes go a bit 'muzzy'.This may have been because i was playing it on my PS2 though.

My Opinion.
***********
If you haven't watched it before and don't take offense easily then i recomend it. The humour is immature and simple so it will make a lot of people laugh and everything is brilliant about it-including the catchy tune. However, some jokes can go over the top. Myself though, i do not seem to mind and therefore love this volume which shows an incredible first few episodes with some funny and well-thought out characters and interesting and unique storylines.
Some (like my dad) call it stupid, but i know he watches it when i do, and laughs at the jokes-just give it a go.
In volume 1, my favourite moment is probably in 'Volcano' where they shot all of the animals and say 'they're coming right at us' when it is just a deer trotting along a hill and then the blood splats across the screen. I think that another is when you see Mr. Garrison at any time talking with Mr. Hat moving his mouth, only to find out that he jumps off his hand and is real.
I do not really have any bad moments in this volume though because i do not get offended easily. However, with the scuzzlebutt, i though that the Patrick Duffy thing, although not too annoying-was not needed because it wasn't funny and for all of the people who don't really know much about Patrick Duffy, or nothing at all, would just get anoyed like me . There is just a feeling that there is no need for it and since it is pointless, it gets a bit annoying.
I think that the animation suits the show because since the whole show is revolved around little kids-i think that it is fitting that it has a sort of cartoony look to it. It also adds to the childish humour. Additionally, i also feel that it isuniquetoo and although some people may find some of the stupid looking scenery annoying, i feel that it is more funny than anything else. It isn't like that in the later series-but i don't miss it, i just found it funny in the earlier series.
Overall i love the show because it has a wide variety of everthing. Yes, there have been cartoons aimed at adults but this one stands out with the wide range of characters each providing a different amount of humour (such as Chef singing, Mr Hat being a puppet and all of the school kids being childish). Its humour is varied so you wont find the same joke twice and it manages as to yet to have not been sued as far as i know (came close with a Tom Cruise episode that i've seen a clip of-banned in UK after Tom threatened to sue them after it was shown in USA). It seems to not hold back anything and that makes it funnier because it is just pure childish humour that will appeal to some and the adult jokes will make you laugh. (Admit it adults-you all laugh at adult like jokes and make jokes like that amongst friends).
Since i don't do many DVD reviews-tell me how to improve it (especially is a Useful or lower rating) please so i can get the best rating and improve. Thanks.
Summary: Addictable and offensive humour.
