Species (DVD) ... Kingsley, Michael Madsen ... / DVD released 01 February, 2000 at MGM Entertainment / Features of the DVD: Dubbed, PAL, Widescreen / There's a kind of perverse marketing genius at work in this cheesy sci-fi hit from 1995 in which scientists create a half-human, half-alien woman named Sil (Natasha Henstridge) who's capable of morphing from a slimy, tentacled creature into a blonde babe with the body of a Playboy centrefold. This makes it easy for Sil to lure gullible guys who are only too willing to indulge her voracious mating urge, realising too late that sex with Sil is anything but safe. As the body count rises, a handpicked team of specialists tracks the alien's killing spree, but their diverse expertise is barely a match for the ever-morphing Sil. Borrowing elements of the Alien movies (including bizarre alien designs by Swedish artist HR Giger) and spicing them up with some tantalising nudity, Species is a wet dream for creature-feature fans--kind of like watching a sci-fi vampire fantasy while browsing through the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

You look at the cast and you might think this is going to be a fairly good movie but you would be so wrong! THE STORY The species story is not original. Scientists have managed to contact alien life in outer space, instead of the old 'take me to your leader' speech the aliens send us a DNA code, obviously the scientist go ahead and inject the DNA in to a human egg to see what hap...

Premium Review Docile and controllable? (1736 words)

Creature features have never really been known for their depth of characterisation, their originality or their deft statements on the human condition. They can, however, be very exciting and make for light-hearted, harmless entertainment. It is on this basis that many such features have, even to the present day far beyond the golden age of such films in the 1950s, scored very highly at the box office, and in 1995, with the by-line “men cannot resist her … mankind may not survive her”, ‘Species’ became one of those films, cleverly combining pretty fast-paced action and special effects wizardry with the other trusty marketing ploy of ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Species (DVD): Soft Core Alien Porn...Sounds More Interesting Than It Is (943 words)

Species was a movie which I had never really intended to see, I certainly wasn't going to go out of my way to track it down or spend my hard earned cash to find after reading some of the disparaging reviews it got aqfter its initial release. The plot sounds rather interesting, but the final execution, dumb in the extreme. Scientists have been trying to communicate with aliens for years, sending messages up into space and not getting nay reply - until now. They start receiving messages back, and in one comes a coded message for some alien DNA. Well of course, being scientists, the first thing they do is inject this alien DNA into a human egg and grow a ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Could Aliens really be this beautiful? (381 words)

For years American scientists had been sending out messages into outer space trying to communicate with other life forms. One day they started to receive replies. In one of the replies was a DNA structure, which the scientists created and injected into a human egg. The egg developed at an amazing rate and a baby was created. The scientists were going to kill the child in order to examine it, but it escaped. Very quickly the child changed into an adult form and headed for Los Angeles in order to mate and reproduce. The start of this film very quickly sets the scene for a seek and destroy mission organised by the American government. A group of ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Species (DVD): Species of ate (169 words)

Rating:

Yet another sci-fi warning not to mess with nature, and more importantly alien DNA. Natasha Henstridge plats the title role of a young and extremely sexy half breed alien/human, who has been created when a DNA sequence is received from outer space. The creature is named Sil and she quickly matures into a head-turning, shapely, blue-eyed blonde. She escapes and proceeds to run riot through Los Angeles in search of a mate.Hot on her tail are a team of scientists, psychics and the like, hoping to destroy her before she has a chance to breed. H.R.Giger was involved with the special effects, but they don't touch his award winning work for Alien. Although ...  Read the complete review
