Spider-Man 2 (DVD)

Description: Genre: Action & Adventure / Theatrical Release: 2004 / Director: Sam Raimi / Actors: Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst ... / ... more
Spider-Man 2 (DVD) ... DVD released 30 November, 2004 at Columbia TriStar / Features of the DVD: AC-3, Anamorphic, Closed-captioned, Colour, Dolby, Dubbed, DVD-Video, Special Edition, Subtitled, Widescreen, NTSC / More than a few critics hailed Spider-Man 2 as "the best superhero movie ever," and there's no compelling reason to argue--thanks to a bigger budget, better special effects, and a dynamic, character-driven plot, it's a notch above Spider-Man in terms of emotional depth and rich comic-book sensibility. Ordinary People Oscar-winner Alvin Sargent received screenplay credit, and celebrated author and comic-book expert Michael Chabon worked on the story, but it's director Sam Raimi's affinity for the material that brings Spidey 2 to vivid life. When a fusion experiment goes terribly wrong, a brilliant physicist (Alfred Molina) is turned into Spidey's newest nemesis, the deranged, mechanically tentacled "Doctor Octopus," obsessed with completing his experiment and killing Spider-Man (Tobey Maguire) in the process. Even more compelling is Peter Parker's urgent dilemma: continue his burdensome, lonely life of crime-fighting as Spider-Man, or pursue love and happiness with Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst)? Molina's outstanding as a tragic villain controlled by his own invention, and the action sequences are nothing less than breathtaking, but the real success of Spider-Man 2 is its sense of priorities. With all of Hollywood's biggest and best toys at his disposal, Raimi and his writers stay true to the Marvel mythology, honouring Spider-Man creators Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, and setting the bar impressively high for the challenge of Spider-Man 3. --Jeff Shannon

Premium Review Spider-Man 2 (DVD): Double Life (Film only) (1047 words)

Rating:

This time around the story came from the guys behind the hit TV show 'Smallville' in the form Alfred Gough & Miles Millar and was made into a screenplay by 'Unfaithul' screenwriter Alvin Sargent. I think this combination of writers has worked out very well for the film because not only did the movie have some great drama and action scenes but they also chucked in some really great comedy momments as well, mostly with the character of J. Jonah Jameson (J.K. Simmons) who plays Peter Parker's boss at the Daily Bugle. It's also great where they added these particular scenes into the film too as the audience are kind of feeling downbeat because of the troubles that are ...  Read the complete review

Following the success of 2002's blockbuster Spiderman came this sequel in 2004 with Sam Raimi again sitting in the director's chair. The creation of Spiderman by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko of Marvel many years had spawned successful cartoon series, but not much success on the big screen until the 2002 offering starring Tobey Maguire as everybody's friendly neighbourhood Spiderman. The Plot Two years on from Spiderman saving New York from the dangerous Green Goblin, and tensions are still running high. Peter Parker is still trying wrestling with juggling two personalitites, and trying to keep his identity as Spiderman secret from his friends and family ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Spider-Man 2 (DVD): Look out! Here comes the Spider-Man (again) (1183 words)

(film only review) What’s it about? -------------------- Continuing his double life as Spider-Man, Peter Parker is starting to unravel as the pressures of being a superhero and an ordinary teen take effect. Meanwhile, a new villain – Doctor Octopus – in town. Who’s in it? --------------- Most of the cast reprise their role from Spider-Man. However, they all seem a lot more comfortable second time around. Tobey Maguire (Peter Parker/Spider-man) is a lot less wooden and seems more at ease with the more emotional aspects of the role. This is just as well, as this element has been really ramped up for the sequel! Kirsten Dunst ...  Read the complete review

Two years or so after we last saw him, our hero Spiderman is still having a tough time. Apart from balancing the time pressures of his high school education against those of a part-time job to pay his rent, he also has his aged aunt to worry about and he has to keep his feelings to himself over the girl he loves. Whilst Mary-Jane Watson means more to him than anything else, he must continually push her away for fear that one of his many enemies will learn of the link between her and Spiderman. Needless to say, he can’t tell Mary-Jane the real reason he pushes away, so he must watch sadly from the sidelines as he struggles to understand him. The final straw comes when, ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Spider-Man 2 (DVD): Spiderman Is Back, And His Pants Are Still To Tight! (522 words)

Well as I mentioned in one of my previous reviews, I'm not usually a big fan of action films. But after watching the first Spiderman film and being really impressed I was quite looking forward to this film. So how did it rate? Well first of all the facts, Spiderman 2 came out back in 2004. It was a massive hit at the box office and also managed to bag on Oscar as well as many other awards and nominations. The film once again stars Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst. The film is directed by Sam Raimi and is based on the Marvel comics written by the legend that is Stan Lee. The story tells of Peter Parker who we all now know is Spiderman. He is ...  Read the complete review
