Advantages: Colourful Cartoon. Good Story Lines. Familiar Characters. Still decent quality
Disadvantages: Shame they only made 24. Spiderman is more well known as a solo Super Hero
Spiderman & His Amazing Friends is a cartoon series made by Marvel Productions. It comprises of 3 seasons with a total of 24 episodes lasting around 25 minutes. The show ran in America originally from 1981 to 1983. It was re-aired many times in America. It was also part of British Children's TV in th 1980's which is where I remember it from.
The cartoon tells the adventures of Peter Parker (Spider-Man), Bobby Drake (Iceman), and Angelica Jones (Firestar). They are all students at the Empire State University. Initially, viewers are not aware how they joined forces but in the 21st episode we are treated to "The Origin of the Spider-Friends". This episode shows that the trio decided to team up after defeating the Beetle & recovering a "Power Booster" he stole from Tony Stark (Iron Man). They live together with Peter in Aunt May's home along with Aunt May & her dog Ms Lion. Other characters from the Marvel Universe also make appearances like Captain America & the X-men (the mid 1970's version) & also for the Villains, the Green Goblin & Doctor Doom.
For a cartoon that was made in the early 80's, it has dated really well. It doesn't look as good as modern cartoons, but it is by no means shabby & is easily watchable. The plot lines are all reasonable, suitable for children & keep you entertained for the length of the episode. To be fair, I don't have any children & I bought this for myself. I'm a 30 year old man & this was my favourite cartoon as a child so was eager to re-live some childhood memories.
I don't think that there are many downsides. More Episodes would have been nice, but you do get them all with this set. The major one is the main reason why I like it. Because of the addition of Iceman & Firestar, I preferred it to Spiderman alone. The problem is that for a more modern & younger audience, the concept of Spiderman living & working with 2 other Superheroes wouldn't work with his back story. Mary Jane is conspicuously absent & the closest thing to a love interest is Firestar.
I would recommend it. I think that adults who remember it from the time might enjoy it more than children would. Kids would still probably like it as it is colourful & fun. I did when I was a kid, but they might be surprised to see Spiderman with help.
Summary: A great cartoon from the 80's which is still good fun. Slightly better for those who remember it.
