Delphine Chanéac is excellent as Dren, although Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley's roles really could have been filled by anyone and money was certainly wasted on employing them as 'big name' actors. It'd have been better as a film starring lesser well known actors. An interesting talking point that came up from this film for me was that intel...more

Title: Splice Starring: Adrien Brody, Sarah Polley, Delphine Chanéac Directed by: Vincenzo Natali Screenplay: Vincenzo Natali, Antoinette Terry Bryant Released: 29 November 2010 Duration: 104 minutes Format: Blu-ray and DVD Vincenzo Natali is the Canadian born writer/director The Cube (1997) which was a low budget (about quarter million Canadian dollars) film about a group of people trapped in a cube. It was an excellent film. Natali went onto make Cypher for around $7M and then was obviously given the chance at a much larger budget ($30M) with Splice. Splice is an inventive, horror-sci-fi-thriller, with a few ...  Read the complete review

Better than a B movie (791 words)

So you look at the film promo, and you think you've got the formula sussed. Mad scientist creates monster. Monster gets out of control. Rampage. Carnage. Blood, guts, special effects. Ends with monster getting killed, hint of sequel to finish. Just add curry, lager, room full of mates, and maybe a spliff or two. Night in sorted. Well, perhaps. Yet in the context of so much predictability, Vincenzo Natali has delivered a horror flick in "Splice" that you may consider surpasses the normal run of the mill 'B' movie fare. Clive Nicoli (Adrien Brody) and Elsa Kast (Sarah Polley) are a cohabiting couple of young genetic scientists both working ...  Read the complete review

Splice (DVD): A strange ethical drama / sci-fi horror hybrid of a movie!! (859 words)

Clive Nicoli (Adrien Brody) and Elsa Kast (Sarah Polley) are two scientists working in a research lab of a powerful pharmaceutical company "N.E.R.D.". They are also a couple and live together. Having successfully combined the DNA of different animals to create two hybrid animals, they suggest adding human DNA to the experiment in order to develop a protein that would possibly provide a huge breakthrough in medicine and earn them huge profits. The company bosses reject the idea on ethical and legal grounds, but Clive and Elsa secretly decide to carry on anyway. Soon enough, the female "creature" is born, and Elsa names her Dren ...  Read the complete review

An entertaining sci-fi/horror tail... er tale (737 words)

Although I am not normally a fan of horror movies I found myself watching Splice the other day. Perhaps I was drawn to the movie as it is directed by Vincenzo Natali the man responsible for the cult classic Cube. Either that or I just have a thing for chicks with tails (Dren the rather attractive creature in this movie has one as she is a human/animal hybrid.) I guess that is what happens when you play World of Warcraft too much. You spend hours staring at a Dranei's backside and before you know it you develop some weird ass tail/hooves fetish. Erm, anyway let's move onto the plot before I scare off all the readers. The film stars Adrien Brody (Predators) and ...  Read the complete review

This is a usual film I would pick up but saw it on Lovefilm so thought give it a try. My expections were very low and the film started off really slow but once it had picked up was really good and could understand what the woman was thinking. The plot A young couple are a couple of scientists trying to invent a new species. By accident they create a species that look a cross between a mouse and a human. The couple monitor this species throughout its life by monitoring any changes and making a log. The species ages very quickly and it is not long before the species becomes a very young girl that loves sweets. The couple ...  Read the complete review
