Advantages: IT IS SPONGEBOB
Disadvantages: you may find our yellow spongey hero annoying
So not only do I love to dive but I also have an addiction to all things childish and marine based, so it was only a matter of time until I succumbed to the charms of Spongebob Square Pants. Initially I found this cartoon irritating and really quite childish, that was until last year when my thoughtful boyfriend bought me a new fish tank the Spongebob Square Pants themed tank. So after realising how cute the characters were and how much my fish enjoyed swimming around with them I thought it was time to find out what this was all about.
So I watched some cartoons, then suddenly before I knew qute what was happening Id bought the cartoons on dvd, followed by Spongebob Square Pants The Movie. And now I can answer the question 'Who lives in the pineapple under the sea?' As is asked in the theme song. Of course the answer is obvious, its Spongebob and not forgetting Gary the snail his faithful pet.
So after the cartoons got boring it was time to indulge in a large dose of Spongebob fun. But first for anyone not familiar with Spongebob he is the bright yellow rectangular sponge who wears brown trousers with a white shirt and red tie. He has a large blue eyes and two protruding front teeth and is almost always happy. See I knew you'd have seen him around somewhere.
So the film, Spongebob is the fry cook at the Crusty Krab, where he is the long term employee of the month, so when Mr Krabs is opening the Crusty Krab 2, Spongebob assumes he is the natural choice for the managers position. But the day of the grand opening Neptunes crown gets stolen and the blame is pointed directly at Mr Krabs!!!!!!
Neptune is pursuaded that instead of just frying Mr Krabs to allow Spongebob and his friend Patrick just 6 days to attempt the dangerous mission to Shell City to get it back and save Mr Krabs.
Needless to say along the way our heroes face danger and adversity (and David Hasselhoff in a mostly pointless cameo - how many children remember Baywatch?) but with the help of Mindy, Neptunes daughter who helps them to believe that they are men not boys (with the aid of some seaweed) and is voiced by Scarlett Johansson. They do finally triumph and return the Crown to King Neptune in the nick of time. Saving the town of Bikini Bottom from an eternity of slavery under the owner of the Chum Bucket (the rival buger place in Bikini Bottom) Sheldon Pankton, and the Krabby Patty receipe in the process.
The main characters in the film are the same as those found in the cartoon,
Patrick - Spongebobs best friend, a purple starfish
Mr Krabs - Spongebobs boss at the Crusty Krab
Squidward - Spongebobs next door neighbour and fellow employee at the Crusty Krab.
Gary - a seasnail who is Spongebobs faithful pet.
The film is rated U although it may be as well to watch it with children (because you'll love it too) and it is 90 minutes long.
The DVD has a few special features on it, these are
'The Absorbing tale behind the Spongbob Squarepants movie'
Case of the Spongebob
Saving the surf
Animatics
Teaser Trailer.
Although I havent watched these yet.
I bought the DVD as part of a 3 for £15 deal at tesco and would say that the usual price i have seen for it is around £5 in supermarket deals but it can be bought for less on amazons market place.
And there is a rumour of a second spongbob film although I havent found any conformation of this on either Nickelodeons own website nor IMDB.
Summary: The long awaited Spongebob film
