Backlash is generally regarded as a fallout pay per view that essentially double dips the remains of WrestleMania, and sadly this is mostly true here, but at least they do offer up a bit more variety than you might expect. The show opens with a decent WWE United States Championship match, with Matt Hardy challenging Montel Vontavious Porter for his gold; this delivers a satisfying result in an athletic contest. The ECW Championship match, though, with champion Kane defending against Chavo Guerrero, isn t quite as exciting, because it s thoroughly predictable and unfolds just as you would think it might. Sunday 2006 is the first year that the Taboo Tuesday event had its name changed for some reason, but the change does little to usurp the concept, which is still quite novel even if we all know that the texting in is fixed. The show starts off fairly boringly, though; Umaga takes on Kane in a singles match without any bells on and without anything particularly exciting happening. The second match has more promise; a Texas Tornado match with Cryme Tyme facing The Highlanders, Charlie Haas and Viscera, and Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch, but sadly it s less than five minutes long and so never gets going. ... paper, No Way Out 2003 was probably quite a good idea, but sadly, there are flaws in the execution, and this comes across as quite a pale event without much flair. The event does start promisingly, though, with Chris Jericho facing Jeff Hardy in an intense technical contest that s just the right length and very entertaining. Also quite watchable is a match for the World Tag Team Championship, with champs William Regal and Lance Storm defending against Kane and Rob Van Dam.
