Advantages: good acting, Borg!, good story

Disadvantages: need to be a Trekkie to enjoy

The second of the Star Trek movies to feature the Next Generation crew brings their scariest bad guys to the big screen in the shape of the Borg.

I'm not a huge Trek fan, and (sacrilege!) I prefer the more recent ones to the original series with lard boy Shatner et al.

But as a person who watches Sky TV, especially at tea times, I've watched probably 99% of all Star Trek episodes since Next Gen started. Not only have the special effects got a lot better, but the writing has done so too, and for this reason the more recent big screen Trek adventures have been better than the earlier ones.

Star Trek: First Contact is more of an action film than the rest, and tells of how Picard and his crew must rescue the man who invents the warp drive, and makes first contact with an alien race, thus kick starting the chain of events that eventually leads to the formation of the Federation.

Obviously, things are a tad more complicated than that, but I don't want to give away too much of the plot - it's worth renting yourself and watching. It also features something you don't normally see in Star Trek episodes - drunkeness! A few scenes are just very funny, although I think that the whole movie is geared towards Trekkies too much (although this is a criticism of ALL Star Trek movies, bit just this one).

The standard of actors in this one is excellent with James Cromwell (the farmer out of "Babe") Alice Krige, Dwight Schultz and Robert Picardo along with the regular members of the cast.

It's hard to see how they're going to continue to write in some of the cast members for the next movies as Worf has jumped ship to Deep Space Nine, and they can't come up up with any more reasons for him to be on the Enterprise, can they?

So: A good movie if you like sci-fi or Trek, but I couldn't really recommend otherwise unless you're fairly familliar with the star Trek: Next Gen world.

I can't believe that I actually paid money to see this at the cinema.
