Advantages: Who doesn't like a Fairy Tale
Disadvantages: Nothing really, just a bit of fun
Stardust is a very enjoyable family feel. A comedic fairy tale flick with princes, spells and castles, although cliché this is still original. Based on the book by Neil Gaiman, the film includes the characters you will love and hate, and is a delightful watch.
Like any good fairytale there is a hero, Tristan Thorn (Charlie Cox) who is somewhat unremarkable and has fallen for the village beauty, Victoria (Sienna Miller). To demonstrate his love he vows to fetch a falling star that they see one night and thus the tale begins.
The star just so happens to fall in the enchanted land of Stormhold and eventually finds the star which has taken the form of Yvaine (Claire Danes). Other cast members include Peter O'Toole as the king of Stormhold and Michelle Pfeiffer who plays a witch, the villain in this movie.
I think that Charlie Cox and Claire Danes perform well with each other and you sit and watch as this unlikely pair grows close, you will them on.
A performance I was not so keen on was Ricky Gervais. He pretty much plays himself and as much as I love his stand up his acting leaves something to be desired. Another question mark for me was Robert De Niro. Two roles he plays well is tough guy or over-the-top tough guy that you want to mock. I think De Niro over did it in this movie but that's not to say his role wasn't funny just more that he has performed better in other movies e.g. Meet the Parents.
In general though, a bit of fresh air, a magical love story that will take you back to your childhood with enough comedy to keep even the coldest of hearts entertained. The ending is what you would expect from any textbook fairy tale, but still with this kind of film, the fun is in the journey.
A philosopher once asked, "Are we human because we gaze at the stars, or do we gaze at them because we are human?" Pointless, really... "Do the stars gaze back?" Now *that's* a question.
Summary: A funny, delightful and romantic Fairy Tale for all.

- 04/07/09 I thought exactly the same about Ricky Gervais in Night at the Museum, he was the only weak character for me. |
