Advantages: Enjoyable fun for fans and newbies alike.
Disadvantages: It seems to short, but don't all good movies seem that way?
The producers of the series were comitted to tidying up dangling plot threads with the first straight-to-DVD release "Ark Of Truth" but when it came to this, the second release, they could have more fun...and fun they do have.
Time travel is common in Science Fiction and is no stranger to the world of Stargate. They are easily forgiven when you get this much entertainment for under £10. I have yet to watch it with a non-fan but I suspect this is much easier for one to follow, well as easy as a time travel story is to follow that is:-)
So where do we begin? Well, former system lord Baal is being executed on the Tokra homeworld and SG-1 (including the welcome return of Richard Dean Anderson in the role of General Jack O'Neill) are in attendance. Suddenly, things go wrong. First Vala, then Tealc vanish. Jack is killed, Carter, Jackson and Mitchell only just escape through the Stargate and emerge, not in the SGC but in a derelict ship, buried in the frozen north.
Baal has caused a change in the original timeline. The SGC doesn't exist because the Stargate never made it to the US and was diverted to the Arctic.
Our three survivors return to the US where they are initially distrusted and even when believed, they are "sentenced" to live out alternate lives where they are forbidden to speak of their past or even to eachother.
Soon, however, world events require their help. Can they save the planet (again) and will they ever return to the world they remember? I think you all know the answer....
Ok, so who doesn't want to watch it now?
The film is sprinkled with cameos, nods to the fans and clever twists. Production values are as high as in the previous DVD, if not higher. How the hell do they stretch $7 million this far?
A word of warning for Richard Dean Anderson fans. His return is more than a cameo but not much more. We are promised he will play a more major role in the 3rd release but here he is underused. Also, the trailer hints at a massive dogfight between F15's and Gould gliders. Alas, the scene in the trailer comprises almost the entire scene in the film and is a little disappointing. That may come across as a little ungracious and I only offer it in the form of balance. It is really hard to be negative!
Another DVD is promised soon and I for one can hardly wait.
Summary: They just keep getting better and better.
