Advantages: Great Action, Big Guns, Big Effects, Giant Killer Bugs
Disadvantages: Poor Plot (hot a huge problem)
For some, the concept of sitting in a cinema while giant bugs get blown to small pieces by an army of suicidal nuts in flimsy armour and with big guns holds no appeal. I've never liked people like that. Starship Troopers stands out from the various 'summer blockbusters' of the last few years as one of the very best action movies in recent time. Admittedly, the plot is a little thin, but sufficient for the film's requirements. The plot is merely an excuse for the rest of the film - however, to give you a quick run-down: Deadly Bugs are attacking the Earth with big meteors, so Earth sends the Mobile Infantry, young people with delusions of grandeur who don't realise that their armour stands no chance or protecting them. And so to the film itself. Casper Van Diem plays a lead role, and does it in fine style, though we may have to wait a few more years to see him at his best. Opposite him is the delectable Denise Richards as a young Pilot in training for the Space Fleet, and again, she plays the part well, but I think we will see better performances in the future. The rest of the cast all put in as strong performances as the script will allow, and are backed up by some spectacular special affects (especially the bugs themselves), which together make this one of the single most entertaining films I have ever seem. It's not Shakespeare, but it is great eye-candy, and perfect for a night in without the missus.

- 19/06/01 A fair review, but I'd never watch it with my girlfriend :) At least, not specifically on a date. |
