State Of Grace (DVD) ... released 23 June, 2003 at MGM Entertainment / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, PAL, Widescreen / Overshadowed by GoodFellas when it was released in 1990, State of Grace gradually emerged as one of the best New York gangster films of its decade. It was also the first to feature the Irish American mob known as the Westies. Here, their territory west of Times Square is being gentrified by an unwelcome infusion of yuppie cash, squeezing them into a reluctant alliance with Mafia kingpins. Frankie (Ed Harris) is the boss; little brother Jackie (Gary Oldman) is his volatile muscle; their friend Terry (Sean Penn) has returned from an extended absence, harbouring a dangerous secret while rekindling his love for Frankie and Jackie's sister Kathleen (Robin Wright, Penn's future wife). Giving one of his scariest, most violent performances, Oldman offers stark, brutal contrast to Harris's pent-up fury, while Penn breathes life into his character's standard-issue dilemma. A former protégé of Steven Spielberg's, director Phil Joanou handles this gritty potboiler with confident, unobtrusive style, ramping up the tension of divided loyalties, even as the plot grows increasingly familiar. --Jeff Shannon

... well to the brilliant score, provided by the legendary Ennio Moricone - he doesn't do bad film scores, and here he provides one of melancholic strings and panicy horns, in keeping with the mood of the film. Not a well known film then, but the acting talent on show means that if you get the chance you should buy it, especially as it's so cheap. The problem with it being so little known, is that the DVD release hasn't had any thought put into it so there are no extras....more

State Of Grace is a 1990 crime thriller, directed by Phil Joanou and starring Sean Penn, Gary Oldman, Ed Harris and Robin Wright. Terry Noonan (Penn) is a cop who years before lived in the area of New York known as "Hell's Kitchen". He returns undercover to help take down an Irish-American gang led by Frankie Flannery (Harris). His younger brother Jackie (Oldman) is a member of the gang and was best friends with Terry in their youth. A fantastic, gritty gangster film (185 words)
by - written on 25/09/08 (Useful, 11 readings)
Rating:

State of Grace may well be the most powerful gangster film I've ever seen. The story revolves around Mike, a young undercover cop (Sean Penn), who is sent back to the city of his birth to bring down a mob of Irish gangsters (and former friends from his youth), headed by Frankie (Ed Harris) and Jackie (Gary Oldman). The film's exploration of the strength of childhood loyalties lift it above the vast majority of gangster movies. The performances elevate it to the ranks of the truly great. Sean Penn is superp as an undercover cop struggling to put his devotion to the law above his devotion to the friends he left behind. Ed Harris' as Frankie presents us ...  Read the complete review
