Advantages: great comedy, funny throughout

Disadvantages: not a strong cast, but the two leads carry it by themselves

When told the plot of step brothers, a story of two men in their late 30's who still live with their parents, enjoy kung fu, play drums and play in a treehouse, there's only a few actors that you can think of capable of such roles. There's only one actor that i can think of that was born for such a role: Will Ferrell.

Since Anchorman Ferrell's career has been hampered with some poor half hearted films such as Semi-Pro, Talladega Knights, Blades of Glory...and so on. All were funny in parts but nothing compared to the laugh-a-minute anchorman, old school and even Elf. Stepbrothers is proof that the king of child-men comedy is back, with a vengence. I must say now that this film isn't just hilarious because of him, John C Reilly (Talladega Knights, Dewey Cox story...) more than holds up his side of the film. Obviously these guys have worked in a few films now, and this film is evidence of their brilliant partnership and gel together. Unsuprisingly this film is written and directed by Adam Mckay who wrote and directed Anchorman and Talladega knights.

This is the story of two men; Dale and Brennan, still living at home, one with a mum and one with a dad. The mum and dad meet, fall in love and marry and so the story begins... from the initial hilarious meeting between the two new step brothers you can tell that this is going to be good value for money.

The story continues with them struggling to share a room, Dale's obsession with his drum kit, the constant fights and arguing, all making it brilliant viewing. All their conflict eventually drives a wedge between their mother and father and predictably you can see the film ending with them having to bring them back together.

The film also stars Mary Steenburgen (Back to the Future) and Richard Jenkins as the mother and father. There's also a brief appearance from Seth Rogen (Knocked Up, Pineapple Express).

Scenes such as them attending interviews in tuxedos and punching Brennan's older brother are brilliant. Not as quoteable as anchorman but there do exist some good lines. Quotes include:

Dale: "I manage a baseball team"
Nancy: "Oh, little league?"
Dale: "Fantasy League"

Great comedy if you like Will Ferrell and 'imature humour', as I do, and films such as Pineapple Express and Superbad.
