Step Brothers (DVD)
Advantages: Quite funny in parts
Disadvantages: Not so keen on Will Ferrell, bit over-the-top humour for me
I watched this after a couple of recommendations from people. Although I found it perfectable watchable and sometimes funny, I definitely wouldn't rate it as one of my preferred films but I think that's just because it's not really in line with my sense of humour. It's an hour and a half and it's now out on DVD.
***** Storyline *****
Will Ferrell plays a 39 year old man who still lives at home with his mother. John C Reilly plays a 40 year old man who still lives at home with his father. When their parents eyes meet across a lecture hall it's love at first sight and almost immediately they are married and the family are living together.
The two 'boys' are used to having everything their way - they are spoilt rotten and have not progressed from a mental age of around 7. Jobless, seemingly talentless and lacking in any personal skills, they are totally dependent on their parents. When the family are thrown together their jealousy of each other and the fact that they are no longer the only one with any attention on them, means that they become arch enemies and the battle commences.
***** Type of Humour *****
I found the humour in this film a bit 'slapstick' in the sense of lots of fighting and falling over type comedy. There was also a constant supply of funny insults flying around and a lot of inappropriate behaviour in front of their parents. I did find some of it pretty funny but I also found it pretty cringey to watch two middle-aged men acting and talking like 7-year olds, it just came across a bit freaky to me.
I, like many other people, do find Will Ferrell pretty annoying and he also succeeded in being pretty annoying in this film, but I also think he's one of those characters that you love to hate. I actually found John C Reilly the funnier character and a little bit less full-on. Probably the only film I've still really enjoyed watching with him in it is Anchorman which I found hilarious.
***** Favourite Scene *****
There was one scene where I found myself laughing out loud I found it so funny. Will Ferrell and John C Reilly both have a habit of sleep-walking in the night. On Christmas Eve when their parents are getting into bed about to go to sleep, they come storming into their room both asleep and start creating havoc. They go downstairs and start grabbing all the christmas presents from under the tree and throwing them around the bedroom violently. You can hear them all smashing and they also launch half of them at the dad.
The funniest part was when Will came back upstairs with the whole christmas tree and threw it on the bed, and then John came in with some Incredible Hulk hands on that he had unwrapped and started attacking everyone with them. Then they grabbed the dad and threw him down the stairs - very funny!
***** Overall *****
Personally, I prefer more subtle and toned down humour, even though I did find parts of this film funny and it was a perfectly watchable film. The people I've spoken to about this film did love it though, so if you are into your comedy films I'd suggest giving it a go.
Summary: An ok comedy which some have found hilarious
