I trained at a dance school for 14 years so I have always been into my musicals and dance films. Some of my favourites include Flashdance, Fame & Saturday Night Fever. But my ultimate favourite has to be Stepping Out and interestingly this is far less known than other films in the same genre. Stepping Out, which was made back in 1991, tells the story of former broadway star Mavis (played by Liza Minelli) who is struggling to make a living singing in dingy clubs in Buffalo, New York. Another hidden gem of a film, this tap dancing story is well worth seeking out. It is a feel good film and there just aren't enough of them in the world. Liza Minnelli is on excellent form as the tutor and the supporting cast, including the wonderful Julie Walters, make the whole film a delight. The story of a tap dancing studio and the people within the class, it does not sound the most exciting of films but you soon find yourself being drawn into their world, toe tapping along and willing them to succeed. An excellent script, terrific cast and some memorable moments, especially at the end, make this a must see for anyone with half a heart - you will laugh and cry ... Read the complete review

I know this went to video in the UK VERY quickly. Why? Because I must have rented it more than 50 times from my local video store when I was in the RAF. Initially I was renting it as a Julie Walters fan (of stuff like Personal Services, Just Like A Woman) & I enjoyed it. Probably a lot more than I should have done. But then again tell me it's got women in tight shiny Lycra and heck I'll watch it. Julie gives a brilliant performance and does look very nice. Most of the ladies do in fact. Liza looks amazing (I told you I was probably watching it for all the wrong reasons!) and plays her role predictably enough. Shelley Winters brings a lot to a role that ...
