Advantages: Relatively entertaining and warm

Disadvantages: Storyline was already exciting and I think the film could have been even better

Stone of Destiny is a 2009 film that had somehow skipped past my radar, it only came to my attention about a week or so ago when I noticed it was part of Billy Boyd's CV (from Empty with Gregor Fisher), he's joined by the likes of Kate Mara and the flexible Robert Carlyle in what is a relatively straight-forward storyline but far from a meagre affair.

Based on true events, this film set in the 50s revolves around the events of a group of Scottish nationalist students who set out to steal the Stone of Scone from Westminster Abbey and return it to Scotland.

Obviously the storyline itself is quite exciting and I suppose it could be questioned as to whether the producer really gave it the bite it needed, it does tend to have been done on the slightly sentimental and relatively jokey side. The film has a tendency to show a very personal side to the group of students and you can't help side with them where ever your alliances lie!

Combining the excitement of the heist, the occasional funny part, a bit of romance and some well shot scenes of rolling countryside and London, this film is quite a jolly affair, it will definitely leave you with a warm feeling at the end.

I'd say this is both a family film and one to watch in with the girlfriend, although baring little resemblance it does for some reason remind me of the Irish film "War of the Buttons", it could be by the warm ending. Despite being panned by critics and the film not doing particularly well financially - I think it's definitely worth a nosey.

Summary: Something to watch on a cold evening in front of the fire!
