Strictly Ballroom (DVD) ... released 28 January, 2002 at ITV DVD / Features of the DVD: Collector's Edition, PAL, Widescreen / While the plot of this Australian film may seem a bit familiar (the Ugly Duckling meets Dirty Dancing), the humourous tone and superb dance sequences will make you forget the movie's predictability. Scott (Paul Mercurio) is a champion ballroom dancer who wants to dance "his own steps". Fran is the homely, beginning dancer who convinces Scott that he should dance his own steps...with her. Complicating matters are Scott's domineering mother (Pat Thompson), a former dancer herself, who wants her son to win the Australian Pan-Pacific Championship (the same contest she lost years ago), and a conniving dance committee that is determined that "there are no new steps!" The dancing is enjoyable, yet not overwhelming, and the movie strives hard not to take itself too seriously (the beginning of the film is even styled as a pseudo-documentary). Strictly Ballroom, while not so subtly imparting its moral ("A life lived in fear is a life half-lived"), is a funny romp that's sure to be a crowd pleaser. --Jenny Brown, Amazon.com

But Fran persists and suggests he acknowledges that he is in no position to be picky. Scott gives Fran a chance and begins to coach her in secret in the evenings. Eventually, Scott decides that he does want to dance with Fran at the Pan Pacifics and they will do a Paso Doble. However, another female dancer seeking a partner, Tina Sparkles, agrees, unbeknown to Scott, to d...more

Crowned Review Strictly Ballroom (DVD): A modern day Cinderella story (834 words)

Introduction Ballroom dancing isn't really something that I particularly enjoy watching, although I have to admit I quite enjoyed some of Strictly Come Dancing. When this film first came out, I wasn't really interested in it, but was forced to go and see it by a friend. Sometimes I think the best films are those that you aren't really expecting much of; certainly, I really enjoyed this film and have seen it time and time again. The director Baz Lurhmann, the director, grew up in rural Australia, and at one point worked at a petrol station. He later used examples of the interesting people that he met in his films. His most famous film to date is ...  Read the complete review

Strictly Ballroom is an Australian film directed by Baz Luhrmann and released in 1992. Sequins, glamour and fake tan are plentiful in this DVD as the film follows various ballroom dancers over the course of the Pan Pacific Championships, fighting it out to be crowned the champions of ballroom dance. We join the film as Scott Hastings is battling between his heart and his head over weather to dance his own steps. After dancing his own steps in the opening gala, his angry dance partner, Liz, leaves him to dance with another dancer, while Scott is left to his critical and pushy mother, along with her dance partner, who want Scott to listen to his head and play ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Strictly Ballroom (DVD): A life lived in fear....is a life half lived. (584 words)

Rating:

Strictly Ballroom is an Australian comedy/ dance film that was released in 1992 and was directed by Baz Luhrmann. Strictly Ballroom was based on the stage play written by Baz Luhrmann and Andrew Bovell. It is rated PG due to some scenes being slightly unsuitable for children and the film is 107 minutes long. Plot Scott Hastings is a fabulous dancer, but he doesn't like the conformity of the dance federation. In one of the major competitions, we see Scott use his own moves and force his partner to go along with them, which make them lose. His mother is a dance teacher and is always shoving the rules down his throat, making him want to rebel even more. ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The most macho camp film you ever could see (477 words)

This was the film that first brought the Australian director Baz Luhrman to the attention of the world, this film is typical of the style he has subsequently brought to the big screen and was a flamboyant and trashy look at the world of Ballroom dancing in Australia. Scott Hastings (Paul Mercurio) is a talented dancer, however he's also a rebel, his mother (Pat Thomson) is a renowned dance teacher and Scott's constant flouting of the rules and procedures of Ballroom draw her to the edge of disowning him, as he creates enmity and enemies in the ballroom dancing community. Whilst a rebel with the rulemakers Scott has an admirer in the shy young Fran (Tara ...  Read the complete review

Well, I'm a huge fan of this film and thought I knew all about it but after just having a quick look on Wikipedia to check the release date and spellings of some of the actor's names, I've just found something I didn't know about it! Apparently Strictly Ballroom was originally a play and was co-written by Baz Luhrmann who then also directed the film. Luhrmann is probably best known for directing blockbusters like Moulin Rouge and Romeo + Juliet but it is his lesser known Strictly Ballroom that is my favourite of his projects and definitely up there in my favourite all time films. The film was released in 1992and is set in Australia, in the world of ...  Read the complete review
