Super Size Me (DVD) ... 10 January, 2005 at Tartan Video / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, PAL / Fans of Morgan Spurlock's engaging documentary Super Size Me won't want to miss almost an hour of extra footage on the DVD. Best of all is a 25-minute one-on-one interview with Eric Schlosser, author of Fast Food Nation, but other interesting moments are a chat with a couple who collects McDonald's memorabilia; an analysis of a supermarket's layout; further conversation with Big Mac fan Eric Gorske and his wife; a look at the deep-fried Twinkie; and a disgusting but funny piece on how McDonald's food rots (or doesn't). Spurlock also provides a commentary track along with his girlfriend Alex Jamieson (you know, the vegan chef) in which they discuss why he included certain scenes, how many times he ate McDonald's salads, and his recommendations for books to read and action to take. And because he and Jamieson received so many inquiries about the "last supper" he ate on film before embarking on his special diet, an insert contains the recipes, including the highly sought-after tofu and vegetable phyllo tart. --David Horiuchi

... do still like the golden arches thankgoodness! Morgan uses this documentary to achieve two things, interviewing experts in 20 US cities whilst at the same time conducting his own little experiment, eating nothing but McDonalds for 30 days straight. Think you could do it, well it's quite a large task, one could say a Supersized task and not as easy as it first sounds. I really liked Morgan as a documentary maker. He has an interesting voice, one that makes you want to listen to him which I think helps and injects lo...more

Premium Review Super Size Me (DVD): A supersized shock (813 words)

My sister and I have been wanting to watch this film for a while now, not because we eat junk food a lot, but just out of morbid curiosity really! So when I saw this on amazon at the price of just £2.78, I brought it. I didn't think it would be something that you need to concentrate on watching, so I put it on in the background while I was tidying, printing notes and journal articles etc. However after the first 20 or so minutes I was really drawn into it. Morgan Spurlock wanted to investigate why America is the fattest nation, and why obesity is close to overtaking smoking as the leading cause of preventable disease. So his mission was to survive on nothing ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review 90 McDonalds meals in 30 days, a healthy or unhealthy film? (395 words)
by - written on 19/01/08 (Very useful, 23 readings)
Rating:

Super Size Me is a documentary of one producer's attempt to eat just McDonalds for one month and see what would happen to his health. The producer is Morgan Spurlock, the man who until then was better known for his "I Bet You Will" show produced for MTV, in which he dared random members of the public to perform vile and nasty tasks in exchange for money. I found the premise of this film entertaining, the idea of seeing what health implications eating just McDonalds would have for a month. However, soon into the film, I actually began to side with McDonalds. The film was one-sided and more of a rant in my mind than a documentary of solid ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Super Size Me (DVD): Big Mac Attack (956 words)
by - written on 05/01/09 (Very useful, 127 readings)

Fancy a Big Mac? Not if you watch this you won't. In 2003, Morgan Spurlock decided to spend 30 days eating nothing but food from MacDonald's. Spurlock was prompted to start his documentary by the case of two teenagers who sued MacDonald's because - shock, horror - they had put on weight eating their food. He wanted to see what effect it had on his health. Strangely, the answer he came up with was "not a good one". Spurlock is a documentary maker in the style of Michael Moore - a rabble-rouser who likes to put on a bit of a show. This is a double edged sword and how you view Spurlock may very well colour your view of this film. To some, he's an ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review You Are What You Eat (1005 words)

Rating:

People are going to fall into one of two camps when it comes to Super Size Me: you'll either think that first time film-maker Morgan Spurlock is a loony or you'll be filled with admiration. Falling into the latter as someone whose attitude to the fast food industry is unreservedly negative, I found his film witty, entertaining and refreshing. But, like the stylistically similar Michael Moore films, it's probably a case of preaching to the converted. My only hope is that someone makes it mandatory for all teenagers to watch this film so that they can make an informed choice about what they are eating. Super Size Me is in effect a reaction to a statement made by ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Super Size Me (DVD): Even I can't get my mouth round it! (1154 words)

McDonalds or Burger King… that is about as much thought I put into the decision of fast food, im not one to sit around and think about the sugar content, the E numbers and whether or not one chip too many will send me wappy (im there already, I don’t need any help). The other ultimate decision being whether or not I want a large meal or just a normal medium sized meal and in all honesty for the sake of 30p isn’t it worth upgrading for those few extra fries and those few extra mouthfuls of Coca Cola? Well it was… Most people don’t think about the consequences that their food habits may have on their bodies, about what their food may contain and how ...  Read the complete review
