Advantages: humour consistent, good story line
Disadvantages: -
Superbad leads the life of two teenagers (Seth and Evan) who are about to graduate from high school. Friends for many years, people start to make questions, as Evan gets accepted into Dartmouth, whereas Seth doesn't, and so has to attend the local state university. Jules (a classmate whom Seth is attracted to), invites them to her party, along with Fogell, who had recently got a fake ID. Unable to say no, Jules asks Seth to take alcohol along to the party, which Fogell agrees to buy.
After Seth finds out that Fogell has called himself "McLovin" (a 25 year old organ donor), he is sure that the ID wouldn't work, and so they wouldn't have any way of getting the alcohol. In the end, Seth and Evan send Fogell into the store anyway. Very nervous, he manages to make his way to the desk with all the alcohol, just before being knocked unconscious by a thief. Evan and Seth, however, don't see the robbery outside, and so 'freak out' when they see the police inside questioning Fogell (Mclovin), assuming it was because of the Fake ID. After the police fail in getting information out of the clerk, they turn to Fogell, whom goes along with his ID, calling himself Mclovin - the 25 year old organ donor. The police believe McLovin, and offer to give him a lift to where he wants to be. Whilst all this is happening, Seth and Evan face problems - they have lost the $100 for alcohol (from Jules) and still have no alcohol. They then decide to go to a house party (after being knocked over by a car driver - who offers to take them). After facing several problems at the party, they get away with 2 detergent jugs full of alcohol.
On their way to the party, they strangely (and coincidentally) end up getting knocked down by a police car... only to find Fogell in the car; Fogell, Evan and Seth escape along with the detergent jugs and the alcohol bought from the liquor store heading for the bus which would take them to Jules' party.
Once at the party, Evan learns Becca (the girl who wants to get together with Evan) has spent the evening drinking heavily and announcing her intentions to have sex with him, but this doesn't happen as she ends up vomiting. Seth drunkenly try to seduce Jules, but she says no as he is to drunk (and she doesn't drink); he ends up passing out, head-butting Jules on his way down, resulting in a black eye. Fogell on the other hand, manages to get Nicola into the bedroom only before the two cops to end up breaking up the party. Evan and Seth make a desperate escape (or at least Seth does carrying Evan), heading to Evan's house after an eventful night.
I found the film overall to be very similar to the American Pie series, not hilariously funny, but a good joke. It is one of those films which you could just keep watching again and again, and still enjoy the jokes made.
It is best suited probably for teenagers, because of the storyline, and also because of the humour used throughout the film. I find every character to have their own funny moments... my favourite definitely being Fogell simply for his 'geekiness' and the way in which he acts so cool in front of his mates, when he really isn't.
Below I have tried to pick out some of my favourite quotes from throughout the movie:
* You changed your name to McLovin?
* The guy's either going think "here's another guy with a fake ID", or here is McLovin, the 25 year old Hawaiian organ donor.
* Gangstasss... what's up guys?
* Fogell... shut the fuck up. And take off that vest! You look like Aladdin.
* I heard she got breast reduction surgery.... What? That's like slapping God across the face for giving you a beautiful gift.
* Well Jules, the funny thing about my back is that it's located on my cock.
* For some reason, I don't know why, I would just kinda sit around all day and draw pictures of dicks.
Summary: A great must see film especially for teens

duncantorr - 15/02/08 From the reviews, this seems to be a love-it-or-hate-it kind of film. I'll probably have to see it myself to decide. Good review, though. |
