Superbad

Directed by Greg Mottola
Written by Seth Rogen (who also appears in the film) and Evan Goldberg,
Produced by Judd Apatow (knocked up)

Superbad is a teen comedy with originality and slapstick humour. Widely considered the best teen comedy since the original 3 American pie movies. The film uses high school life to make fun of potential real life situations. the film opened at #1 at the U.S. box office, grossing $33,052,411 in its opening weekend. The Superbad DVD was released on December 4, 2007 and shares equal success. Two books were made associated with the movie Superbad: The Illustrated Movie book and Superbad: The Drawings.

Cast:
Michael Cera (Evan)
Jonah hill (Seth)
Christopher Mintz-plasse (fogell/McLovin)
Seth Rogen (Michaels) & bill Hader (Slater) play the 2 police officers

The story
Evan and Seth are high school friends about to leave for college, Evan is more intelligent than Seth and is able to get into a different college along with fogell. Both Evan and Seth have crushes on girls and get invited to a party and agree to buy alcohol (despite being underage.) fogell obtains an ID and this is where the fun begins. Following a series off clumsiness and misunderstandings fogell ends up in the company of the police officers and the boys (Seth and Evan) at the wrong party, without giving away too much the story finds itself down a path of typical teen life and latches onto that to make fun out of awkward situations.

Cera (who won Most Promising Performer at Chicago Film Critics Association Awards 2007) plays the part of shy Evan really well, he's the typical guy who is good looking and is attractive to girls but lacks the confidence to approach them. He projects his voice in such a way that he sounds angelic or even afraid and it fit's the character very well.
Hill plays the part of cocky Seth superbly, Seth is the kind of guy that will exaggerate the truth to make himself sound better or more important than he is, he has buckets of confidence that deep down hide someone who is scared. Hill portrays the character well with his facial expressions and attitude.
Mintz-plasse plays geeky boy fogell so well that sometimes you wonder 'is he like that in real life'. Fogell is the typical nerd with big specks and misunderstandings. He idolises Seth and Evan and try's so very hard to get recognised by them.

The director
Greg Mottola Had not had much experience directing big films before superbad, he had directed independent movies such as The Daytrippers and episodes for TV series arrested development and undeclared. So for a first effort he certainly did very well.

The writers
Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg began working on the script when they were just 13 years old and completed the draft by the age of 15. The 2 main characters in the film share the writers first name as the film is loosely based on them.
Rogen has also written for the final series of Da ali G show, freaks and geeks and undeclared, Rogen is also an actor having appeared in Donnie darko, you me and Dupree and Anchorman.

The soundtrack was released on August 7th 2007 it has 40 tracks and original music by Lyle Workman and Bootsy Collins. It also includes songs from as Curtis Mayfield and Rick James. However the soundtrack does not include songs from more famous artists such as KC and the sunshine band, Notorious B.I.G and the four tops, all of whom are heard in the film.

Overall the film was thoroughly enjoyable with many laugh out loud moments, it more than adequately fill the void left by the first 3 American pie fills in the teen comedy genre.

I still really fancy seeing this, though haven't gotten round to it. Maybe if it's cheap on ebay soon.
