Superhero Movie (DVD)

Spoof films have become something of a joke of late. In the 1980s, films such as Airplane! and The Naked Gun and its sequels were brilliant spoofs of different films, and were met with rapturous applause and praise. And, indeed, they were funny. More recently, we have seen Scary Movie, a spoof of Scream and a number of other horror movies, and this was actually quite funny, although not a patch on Airplane! or Naked Gun. Scary Movie also spawned sequels, but they went too far and have made one too many. And then come Superhero Movie, which I am sure you can tell by the title spoofs various superhero movies. The movie starts with a Spiderman spoof which is your introduction to Rick Riker (played by Drake Bell of "Drake & Josh" fame, personally I'd have given the movie to Josh who is much funnier) and the "Rick Punchers" joke is lifted right out of Airplane so the writers were obviously already scraping the barrel for ideas for this film. Rick's class is on a science trip to The Amalgamated Genetics lab and this is where we get to meet the 1st star name in the film, Brent Spiner (Data in Star Trek TNG) playing Dr Strom. I wouldn't exactly say I am an intellectual film buff, but I don't so much watch "Silly Comedies" anymore. I have taken to watch more films thesedays, since I find them on Sky Anytime, and this was my latest watch. Superhero Movie is a spoof comedy that takes the mickey out of proper films. Just like on the Scary Movie films, where they ripped off The Ring, Scream and so on, this film is all about the Superhero Genre. I didn't watch much Superhero films, so perhaps I didn't get some of the obvious jokes, but I do Like Spiderman, and I could tell the way this film was heading from the start. When Rick Riker is bitten by a Dragonfly he is given superpowers. Will he be able to use his new found powers to thwart the evil Hourglass? "Superhero Movie" has dud written all over it and delivers exactly what you expect. Okay, so the cast list is better than many other spoof movies with the legendary Leslie Nielsen and Christopher Donald in supporting roles. However, this is the only positive thing you can take from this film. THE PLOT: Bitten by a radioactive dragonfly, Rik Riker develops super powers and becomes a hero. MY OPINION: First off, this film is a spoof of other films, and is not a serious superhero film in its own right. It's one of a series that mocks a popular genre (most recent is Disaster Movie). As such, the film will only work if you know the superhero movies it is mocking. Films parodied include Spiderman, X Men, Fantastic Four, Batman Begins, and the Lord of the Rings.
