Advantages: Christopher Reeve and the score!
Disadvantages: Limited special effects
Superman is perhaps the most famous of superheroes. Many comics, cartoons, TV series and films have been made of the superbeing from the planet Krypton. This is the 1978 movie which spawned a host of following superman films.
The Plot
The planet Krypton is under danger of being destroyed by the red sun. Kal-El is sent by his parents to safety, and ends up landing on Earth in human form, in what people believe to be a meteor. He is taken in by the Kents, who raise him as their own. He adopts the name Clark, and heads to Metropolis to work as a journalist for the Daily Planet, where he meets and falls in love with Lois Lane. Before long, the world is put in jeopardy by the scheming criminal Lex Luthor, and Superman must act quickly to save the world.
Cast and Performances
Christopher Reeve plays Clark Kent/Superman, and does so well that his name and Superman's are now synonymous with each other. A great performance of Superman. Then follows a host of household names, including the brilliant Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor. Margot Kidder plays Lois Lane. All the cast perform admirably, but it is Reeve who steals the show.
My Opinion
I do like this film very much. It does not have any of the pizazz that superhero films of today have, but John Williams' score combined with Reeve's screen presence sends tingles down my spine everytime Superman comes on screen.
A very good film depends on the whole thing mixing well, and this is very well done. Naturally, the special effects work is limited as the 1970s did not yield a great deal like the CGI and special screens we associate with films of today, but this aside, a great film.
Conclusion
Wonderful comic book adaptation
The DVD is available from amazon.co.uk for £4.97.

- 18/03/08 Structurally this is good, but you've been far too brief within your subheadings to deserve a VU particularly on the performance bit. |
