Advantages: Christopher Reeve, exciting story
Disadvantages: bit dated by modern standards
This original superman film was released in 1978 and starred the late great Christopher Reeve, as well as Gene Hackman and Marlon Brando.
This film covers a great deal of the superman story from his origins on the planet Krypton to his life on earth as a teenager in Smallville and his life as the mild-mannered and bumbling reporter who works for the Daily Planet newspaper.
The film has a very 70s feel, and whilst some of the effects are rather dodgy and dated by todays standards the film is very charming and entertaining. Christopher Reeve pulled off the role brilliantly finding the ballance between awkward and shy Clark Kent and cool, smooth and powerful superman very well indeed. This film really does have a genuine comic book feel. Indeed, there are some very strange characters not least Lex Luthor's sidekicks who are more like comic characters than serious roles. This whole excellent film is topped off by John Williams' exceptional score, a man who surely has to be labelled a genius considering his role in writing the music for so many classic films.
The extras on the DVD are well worth watching with several additional scenes and a number of several excellent documentaries and making of featurettes.
Well worth watching if you have never seen it!
