Advantages: super man on a feature packed DVD!
Disadvantages: those damn snapper cases
Superman The Movie: Back in 1978 the world was to believe a man could fly with the release of the multi million-dollar movie “Superman” After Spending years being repeated on TV and re-released on Video over and over Superman has finally been released on DVD and for Warner Bros. A feature packed DVD. (Also available in a special edition box set with Superman II) Superman has been basically spilt into three acts, The Destruction of Krypton, Growing up in Kansas and Metropolis. The movie begins with Jor-El (Marlon Brando) sending Kal-El to earth to escape the destruction of Krypton. When Kal-El arrives on earth more thousands of years later he is found by Martha and Jonathan Kent who suddenly finds out that Kal-El isn’t a normal boy when he picks up their pickup truck to help Jonathan change a tyre. They name him Clark and raise him as their own. After the death of his father Clark goes to the middle of nowhere and throws the crystal that was placed in the “ship” he came to earth on. Doing this causes the Fortress of Solitude to rise from the waters. Clark Spends, twelve years learning who he is and what he can do with his powers, which leads up to the moment everyone, has been waiting for… To see Superman fly for the first time. (If you can wait for over an hour forward to 0,49:51 on your counter) Lex Luthor is the evil genius that is about to make the land he owns skyrocket in value, by detonating two nuclear warheads on the surrounding land. But Superman has to make the choice between the woman he loves and the thousands of lives under threat. For a Movie that was made more than 20 years ago it still stands tall with the blockbusters of today, the effects are great you cant even see the wires that make superman fly (sorry to ruin the magic) and the plot even though it is over the top still makes me want to watch over and over again. The disc is a dual layer double sided DV
D (DVD-18 disc). Side A contains the movie (120 min) a feature length commentary by director Richard Donner and Tom Mankiewicz, ten deleted scenes, awards won and a 5.1 music only track. Side B contains the special features. “Taking flight: the development of Superman” Documentary (30 min) “making Superman: filming the legend” documentary (31min) “the magic behind the cape” documentary (23 min), three screen tests, additional music cues, deleted scenes, vintage TV spot, trailer, Storyboard to screen (DVD rom only) Web links and English Subtitles. (120 min) Each Documentary is focused on different aspects of making the movie: Taking Flight The Development of Superman. Is about pre-production, and casting. Making Superman: Filming the Legend. Is about what new techniques were used to film Superman, the problems with time and budgets and the eventual release of the movie. And “ The Magic Behind The Cape” is about the special effects used in the movie. The three documentaries give a very detailed insight on how the movie was made from pre-production to the “daunting task” of how to make a man fly. Each documentary has interviews with Marlon Brando, Christopher Reeve, Richard Donner and more. These are definitely worth watching once you are sure to learn something that will make you go “oh yeah!” (Like when you listen to the theme tune you can actually hear the music say the word “Superman”!!! or that they didn’t use a big fan to make his cape flap in the wind small radio controlled wires were used to make the cape move in the “wind”! wow If you buy Superman The Movie on its own then you get the usual Warner Bros snapper case but if you decide to get it in the special edition box set with Superman II then you do still get the snapper cases but you get an extra very cool sleek black sleeve which looks very cool The Movie
is presented in 2.35:1 wide screen, which is suitable for all TV screens. The picture and sound quality is second to none and there are enough extras to keep you entertained for ages. And the movie will keep you watching for years to come! 5/5 “Super!!”
