Advantages: Some good special effects, James Spaders best performance for a while

Disadvantages: Too similar to other movies, only about 80 mins long, Angela Bassett is wasted

If you saw reviews of this movie then you would stay away from it and write it off as a complete flop. I am a Sci Fi fan so for all my sins I decided to give this film a chance and risk watching it!

From watching the trailer Supernova is billed a sci fi horror movie. The trailer actually looked pretty good and exciting so the bad reviews came as a surprise. Anyway the story is pretty simple. James Spader plays the newly promoted captain of a rescue craft which scours the universe looking for stress calls. Angela Bassett stars along side him as the the doctor on board the ship. The ship and its crew get a call for help and wizz off to help. To cut a long story short they find a human played by Peter Facinelli. All goes wrong from that stage and people get killed and the whole plot is predictable.

Supernova is not a bad film, it is just very predictable and takes alot of ideas from other movies. I spotted several scenes which were a copy of movies like Aliens, Abyss and Event Horizon. Whether you consider this to be a bad thing is down to personal opinion. I just found the movie to be boring in parts and it offered nothing new.

The actors do their best to make this movie interesting. James Spader gives his best performance for a long time. He seemed quite at home playing the cool captain. Peter Facinelli also does a reasonable job as the slighly strange human that the crew rescue. He is not very frightening but overall his performance is acceptable. I have to admit to being slightly disappointed with Angela Bassetts peformance. This was certainly not her best performance and I was disappointed with her role. There was not much scope for her acting skills.

The short running time of just over 80 minutes just goes to show that the people behind the film were really struggling for ideas.

Supernova is certainly not the greatest sci fi action film that I have seen. It is definetely not a sci fi horror as it was not very scarey at
all. I would take a look at this movie if there is nothing else that inspires you at the video shop. The special effects are worth taking a look at. It is definetely not a movie worth buying.
