Advantages: Charlize Theron
Disadvantages: Keanu Reeves, Attrocious Plot, Predictability
I would love to be able to tell you that 'Sweet November' is the sweet, charming romantic feel-good film which we all want it to be. But unfortunately, I am going to be blunt, it was another complete disappointment. Sweet November is a remake of a 1968 film and it does have an old-fashioned 1960s feel to the plot. A ruthless advertising man has his life turned upside down by a flaky young woman who makes it her business to take men into her care for a month of spiritual enlightenment. Our man for November is Nelson Moss (Keanu Reeves). He has recently flopped an inappropriately sexy campaign for selling hot dogs. This scene is Reeves actually showing us a bit of humour, and it is definatley one of his better moments. It goes downhill from there. He meets the 'hippy' Sara Deever (Charlize Theron) who has the occupation of liberating dogs from research laboratories. This appears to be how she earns her living! She convinces our high-flyer to move into her crazy San Francisco appartment, urging him to rid his friends, his clothes and, of course, his bad habits. And this is basically the plot. Gred Germann provides a little comedy as Nelson's advertising partner, but he doesnt really get the chance to lift the film. And then there's the transvesite downstairs who is Sara's best friend. Why but of course, its a Randal Kleiser film. Although Theron is a great actress with a lot of appeal and skill, she cannot pull off this role, because no actress really could. I mean, come on, she takes a different man in every month to make them a better person. It is just so ridiculous and not in a good way. Oh by the way, you guessed the fact that she really falls in love with Nelson and (I'm going to give away the ending here but you can guess from the trailer anyway) she is dying and her 'new man each month' was designed to keep romance at bay. The whole film is one of the
most predictable I have ever seen. She walks off into the sunset leaving Reeves looking like he is pretending to care. He also sings a love song. If you are not a Reeves fan, this film is sheer torture. So, in summary, if you are looking for a nice, feel-good romantic comedy with quality acting and a semi-believable plot, avoid this like the plague and go and see a good ol' British film instead.
