Swept Away (DVD) ... 12 May, 2003 at Uca Catalogue / Features of the DVD: PAL, Widescreen / Madonna gives her most believable performance in Swept Away as Amber, a rich woman on a sea cruise who expects the world to obey her every whim. When she and a high-spirited crew member (Adriano Giannini) are marooned on a small deserted island the feud that sprang up between them on the ship becomes an all-out war then changes into lustful desire as Amber finds that losing status opens up a new side of her personality. Some people will want to see Swept Away for the simple pleasure of seeing Madonna being slapped; more demanding filmgoers will, sadly, be left wanting. Though the movie purports to be a satirical examination of capitalism (as was the original 1974 version), its vague discussion of money and power adds up to very little. The love story is surprisingly sincere, making Swept Away a standard romantic potboiler with gorgeous tropical backdrops. --Bret Fetzer

The film has a lot of good points, the scenery and settings are breathtaking, both lead actors look great and you woul...more

**film only review** Previous visitors to my reviews will know by now that I am a fan of Madonna. Always have been and always will be; however even I cannot defend her performance in this film from 2002. Directed by Guy Ritchie (Madonna's then husband) the film is a remake of a 1974 Italian film starring Giancarlo Giannini. Interestingly Madonna's co-star in this film - Adriano Giannini is the son of Giancarlo who played the same part in the original version. Billed as being a story of love, sex and too much money the central plot follows an upper class snob - Amber (Madonna) who gets stranded on a desert Island with an Italian fisherman Guiseppe ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Should have been swept away (836 words)

Sometimes I think that, when Madonna makes a film, the reviews are written before the critics have even seen it. There is such an expectation for her to be bad that reviewers feel quite safe being critical before the event, almost certain that they will be proved correct. So it was that her latest offering, 'Swept Away', directed by her highly praised husband, Guy Ritchie, entered America on a tide of critical vitriol. Hence no one went to see it, and it went straight to video in Britain. But could it really be THAT BAD? The only way to find out was to rent it for myself? HISTORY 'Swept Away' is a remake of a 1975 Italian ...  Read the complete review
