Swingers (DVD) ... 06 December, 1999 at Pathe Distribution / Features of the DVD: PAL, Widescreen / For anyone who wants to catch a glimpse of the Los Angeles "lounge" scene that was in vogue during the early and mid-1990s, here's the movie that virtually defined that brief but colourful nightlife milieu. As an added bonus, it just happens to be a very funny, observant story about love, loss and male bonding among a group of friends who struggle to find decent jobs by day, and lurk through Hollywood's hottest nightclubs by night. A sort of latter-day Rat Pack, they include Mike (writer-actor Jon Favreau) and his closest buddy, Trent (Vince Vaughn), who are waiting for the big show-biz break that seems to be eluding them. Mike's twisted up about the girlfriend he left back East to pursue his going-nowhere standup comedy career, and Trent uses the word "money" as an adjective ("Man, we look totally money tonight") with such frequency that you may find yourself slipping into lounge-lizard mode after watching the movie. One of the most noteworthy indie-film success stories of the 90s, Swingers is a time-capsule comedy that seized its moment in the spotlight, launched several promising careers and continues to maintain its lasting appeal. --Jeff Shannon

... pretentiousness of the LA lounge scene. The film's chief protagonist is Mike (Jon Favreau), an unemployed actor who has recently moved to LA to see if he can "make it" after being dumped by his girlfriend. To cheer him up, and hopefully get him laid, his extremely charming and confident buddy Trent (Vince Vaughn) attempts to cure him of all of his woes by taking him around town and introducing him to the lounge and swing scene. He is also with his other friends, Rob (Ron Livingston), Charles (Alex Des...more

Crowned Review Swingers (DVD): Swing by and pick up this film! (332 words)

If there is a film that will shows you what the world cool means then has to be Swingers. You'll spend weeks using the phrases and trying to emulate the massive coolness the characters in Swingers have. Swingers is set in LA, and follows a group of guys who are all budding actors. The main character is played by John Favrau who also happened to write the script. Favrau has the misfortune to have recently been dumped by his long-tem girlfriend. When I say recently I mean 6 months ago, for poor old Favrau is having a hard time coming to terms with this. Of course all his friends would happen to be good looking, hard drinking and fast talking guys who ...  Read the complete review

Swingers is one of those few films that despite having several flaws, is enjoyable enough that we don't really care, and happily accept it. It doesn't have much of a story and several of the characters are unlikable, yet the film is still one of the most entertainingly fun films to have appeared in the last decade. The lack of story centres around a bunch of guys in Hollywood who cruise various clubs, parties and bars, always with the ultimate aim of finding women, even though most of them aren't looking for any kind of relationship, and wouldn't know what to do if they did manage to end up in one. The two characters the film ...  Read the complete review

I?ve wanted to see Swingers for what feels like forever now - obviously it isn?t forever as the movies not even 10 years old yet, but you get the picture. It all started back when I bought Go! on DVD (2001 if my memory still works fine) and saw the header ?from the makers of Swingers? - then I watched Go! and decided that Swingers was probably going to be good as well. Well in the early hours of one morning it was on Channel 4 - so 3 years after first wanting to see it, Tripley has finally seen Swingers... and what did he think of it? Well that?s why I?m typing this little review out for all of you. The story is simple really, 6 months ago Mike moved to ...  Read the complete review

Swingers as a film does have its comic moments and this film was quite an engaging drama with some good acting in it. Jon Favreau plays Mike who is a struggling comic seeking fame as are all of his friends in Los Angeles, either as actors, comics or writers, Mike is still really cut up about his recent break up with his girlfriends even though it happened a few months ago so his close friend Trent, played by Vince Vaughn, and some other mates attempt to get him over the break up by hitting the hot spots in Hollywood. When was the last time you really identified with a film? I mean really felt that some part of your life was up there on the screen? If it's been a while then you must rent the movie. I've watched it countless times and it never gets stale. This is real life. If you're a guy then you'll know that and if you're a girl then this all you'll need to understand the psyche of twentysomething guys. Writer Jon Farveau (who also plays the main character) has exposed us all as the vain, insecure, arrogant and deeply sad men we are. The focus of the plot is on Mike and his attempts to get back into the romance game after six months of pining for ...  Read the complete review
