Take The Money And Run (DVD) ... released 07 May, 2001 at Fremantle Home Entertainment / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, PAL / Woody Allen's feature-film debut, Take the Money and Run, a mockumentary that combines sight gags, sketchlike scenes, and stand-up jokes at rat-a-tat speed, looks positively primitive compared to his mature work. Primitive, but awfully funny. Allen plays Virgil Starkwell, a music-loving nebbish who turns to a life of crime at an early age and, undaunted by his utter and complete failure to pull off a single successful robbery, continues his unbroken spree of bungled heists and prison breaks even after he marries and raises a family. Narrator Jackson Beck, whose stentorian voice of authority makes a perfect foil for Starkwell's absurd exploits, lobs one droll quip after another with deadpan seriousness. Though spotty, Allen tosses so many jokes into the mix that it hardly matters and when they hit they are often hilarious: the chain gang posing as cousins to their old-woman hostage ("We're very close", Virgil explains to a dim cop), arguing with a dotty movie director who is supposed to be their cover for a bank robbery, Virgil's escape attempt with a bar of soap. Allen spoofs decades of crime films, everything from I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang to Bonnie and Clyde, but you don't have to know the movies to enjoy this goofy, sometimes clumsy, but quite clever comedy. --Sean Axmaker, Amazon.com

One interesting thing about this movie is that part of the scenes in prison, where actually shot in a real prison, the San Quentin State Prison and some of the prisoners actually acted in the movie! The plot is very simple, in the end Virgil will escape from prison, but his doomed to failure. I will not give away the end. You laugh and at the...more

"Take the money and run" was one of the first movies of Woody Allen. It was produced in 1969 and was following the script of Woody, who had written it the year before. This was the first movie where Woody would write, direct and even act! Virgil is the main character (played by Woody Allen), he is a criminal who entered a life of crime very early, and has now ended up in jail. The style of the movie is documentary, and, again, this was the first time that Woody would take this style, which he later used in other movies. Take the Money and Run is a 1969 comedy starring and directed by Woody Allen. Allen had substantial creative control over a picture for the first time and made his debut as a director. For this reason Take the Money and Run is really the first 'proper' undiluted Woody Allen film. Filmed in a mockumentary style, Take the Money and Run chronicles hopeless bank-robber, and general failure, Virgil Starkwell (played by Allen) and uses fake cinéma vérité interviews, old newsreels and a non-stop assortment of verbal and visual jokes. The film is a parody of the genre and references everything from Bonnie and Clyde to old black and white Prison films. ...
