Advantages: Bloody brutal intense fight scenes, lots of action, good performance from Neeson
Disadvantages: Lacks depth and surprises
This was a film which appeared many times on television during the time it was being aired at the cinema. What caught my eye were the quotes from critics which likened it to the bourne series. So with the film according to the quotes offering a potentially fantastic film, I decided to rent this film out.
The plot for this movie starts out with a former retired CIA agent Bryan who is seeking to make up for lost time and form stronger bonds with his daughter Kimmy. However he is surprised and initially reluctant to consent to his daughters request that she be allowed to go to France with her friend. After his former wife reminds him that he owes this to her he reluctantly agrees to let her go. As soon as his daughter and her friend touch down in Paris though things become drastically out of control as Bryan learns both Kimmy and her friend have been kidnapped.
This then sets the stage for Bryan to draw upon all of CIA experience in a desperate bid for revenge against the kidnappers and to find his daughter hopefully still alive.
Liam Neeson (Bryan) is the star of this show and his character takes on a cold ruthless streak which will see him becoming as brutal as it takes to find the answers he needs and find his daughter. The performance delivered is intense but doesn't exactly display much emotion.
The key feature from this film are the many fight scenes, they are very bloody and brutal, intense and prolonged. Clearly there has been a lot of work on the martial arts aspect as the fight scenes look very intense.
However while this is to be commended, I think the comparison made by the critics is somewhere far off the radar though as this film does not have an intricate plot or offer any great surprises. In fact while I enjoyed this film, I was quite disappointed by the lack of depth. I was expecting much more from this film given the billing it had received, not to mention the calibre of the operative. It seemed to be a stage from where a much bigger elaborate plot could be set but unfortunately this is not the case.
Overall I would recommend this film but I would caution that if you were looking for a more thought provoking film, you should look elsewhere. I would award it 3.5 stars as it's better than 3 stars but doesn't have the right balance to justify more than that.
Summary: Good but not as good as I hoped
