Advantages: Great cast

Disadvantages: Not quite as funny as Anchorman

Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby may not be among Will Ferrell's finest comedies like Anchorman or Step Brothers, but it's still a rousing film that's got a great cast and plenty of laughs.

Ricky Bobby (Will Ferrell) was born to live fast, for he was even born in the back seat of his father's car. Lucy Bobby (Jane Lynch) raised him by herself, whilst his strung out alcoholic drug addict father Reese Bobby (Gary Cole) was nowhere to be found. Ricky pursues a career on the NASCAR circuit, and finds fame quickly as one of the best racers around, bringing him much fame and fortune, as well as an attractive wife Carley (Leslie Bibb). He also has his best pal Cal (John C. Reilly) as the team's second driver.

However, following a race with curious French NASCAR racer Jean Girard (Sacha Baron Cohen), Ricky is defeated and left in a debilitating state after a heinous car wreck. The rest of the film documents Bobby's attempt to regain his stardom and make it back to the big time once and for all, despite personal demons getting in his way (such as the questionable faithfulness of his wife), and some psychological problems stemming from his crash against Girard, such as the belief that he is paralysed.

The script itself is only mildly amusing most of the time, but Ferrell and co really give it their all, particularly John C. Reilly as his slimy best friend is of note. Also, Sacha Baron Cohen gets a few laughs with his penchant for crafting memorable and amusing characters.

A nifty sports comedy anchored by an impressive ensemble cast helmed by Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly and Sacha Baron Cohen. The scattershot humour isn't always spot on, but the kinetic race direction more than makes up for it.

Summary: A solid comedy but not much more
