Tarzan (DVD) ... Goldwyn, Minnie Driver ... / DVD released 04 September, 2000 at Walt Disney Home Video / Features of the DVD: Animated, PAL, Widescreen / After watching Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote to Walt Disney about adapting his novel of an ape-man into a feature animated cartoon. Some 60 years later, the tale is finally told with brilliant design work that looks unlike any previous animated film. The story is a natural for Disney since the themes of misunderstood central figures have been at the heart of its recent hits. Disney's Tarzan doesn't wander far from the familiar story of a shipwrecked baby who is brought up by apes in Africa. What gives the film its zing is its clever use of music (the songs are sung by Phil Collins himself rather than onscreen characters) and the remarkable animation. Deep Canvas, a 3-D technology, was developed for the film, creating a jungle that comes alive as Tarzan swings through the trees, often looking like a modern skateboarder racing down giant tree limbs. The usual foray of sidekicks, including a rambunctious ape voiced by Rosie O'Donnell, should keep the little ones aptly entertained. The two lead voices, Tony Goldwyn as Tarzan and Minnie Driver as Jane, are inspired choices. Their chemistry helps the story through the weakest points (the last third) and makes Tarzan's initial connection with all things human (including Jane) delicious entertainment. Disney still is not taking risks in its animated films, but as cookie-cutter entertainment, Tarzan makes a pretty good treat. --Doug Thomas

Tarzan falls in love with her. But their gird has some hidden motives and Tarzan is the only one who can stop him. Story is simple and made for children. Backed up with excellent music by Phil Collins. Songs are rally nice and catchy. And animation is really good. Especially I liked the way they animated Tarzan. From all of the Tarzans mad...more

Tarzan (DVD): What did you expect? (120 words)

Well what did you expect. This is your usual Disney fare and they seem to be getting a bit sloppy recenty as their animated films aren't as good as 5 years ago with greats such as Aladdin and Lion King.Don't get me wrong I enjoyed this but it wasn't amazing.I also missed the sing along songs which are normally entertaining and I didn't like Phill Collins Stuff.Sorry.The comic sidekicks aren't in it enough and really it all seemed a bit flat. It is enjoyable though and the technique used for the swinging scenes and the camera moves in action scenes were very good. Not the best Disney but still enjoyable. ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The Original Swinger... (934 words)

I took two of the girls I foster to see the Disney version of Tarzan (based on the story by Edgar Rice Burroughs) when it was first released and I loved it from the very beginning. Time for a slight confession though, that I am a bit of a softy! The story begins with Tarzan as a young baby arriving with his parents in the jungle after the ship they were on sunk. After showing some pretty nifty building skills they make a home in the trees but sadly are found by a cheater who kills his parents. Just prior to this a baby gorilla is killed by the same large cat leaving Kala, it’s mother bereaved. Now you’ve probably guessed already that the ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Tarzan (DVD): Two worlds, one family... (661 words)

Two things put me off seeing Tarzan: 1) That god-awful Phil Collins song heard in the trailer 2) It's a Disney movie Recently, however, I picked it up on DVD for only £9.99. However bad it is, I thought, I can always sell it on for at least that much. I sat down and watched it for the first time last night. How wrong could I have been!? For a start, the animation is fantastic. Real jaw-dropping stuff. The 3D CGI backgrounds look so real it's scary - even more so than in Toy Story 2. The jungle looks more interesting and alive in Tarzan than in any other animated film I've seen. Also, the voice talent is awesome. Minnie ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Collectors Edition is worth the extra (359 words)

I was in Asda shopping the other day, and I saw in their very limited DVD range, the new Disney DVD "Tarzan". My kids have been good in their returns to school so I thought I'd treat them. Then I saw the collectors edition on another shelf and thought I'd pick it up and have a look (you'll notice that there is a sketch of Tarzan on the front cover). After the assistant tried to tell me that it wasn't the actual movie Tarzan and just a making of Tarzan, I persuaded her that I knew what I was doing and bought anyway. The movie itself it standard Disney, the voices are great (Minnie Driver as Jane in particular, there is ...  Read the complete review

Having missed Tarzan at the cinema I decided to splash out ( - well spend a blackstar voucher I earnt here!! ) on Tarzan on dvd. The thing about buying on video or dvd ( for me!! ) is it's actually cheaper than taking my troop to the pictures!!! It also spares me the formidable task of being forced to sit through an hour and a half of wiggly bums, spilt drinks and utter boredom!!!! Today my pre-ordered copy arrived first post, compliments of Royal Mail, and we sat down to watch it over our breakfast.... and watched it.... and watched it!!! Now anyone that has read my opinions on other Disney films will know that I am not exactly a big fan of them but I'm ...  Read the complete review
