Taxi [2004] (DVD) ... DVD released 11 April, 2005 at 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment / Features of the DVD: PAL, Widescreen / Bumbling cop Washburn (Jimmy Fallon) is a terrible driver who loses his license and so recruits reluctant Belle (Queen Latifah) and her souped-up mega-cab after he stumbles onto a team of supermodel bank robbers. Several klutzy encounters and high-speed car chases ensue. If this sounds to you like the obvious result of a Hollywood pitch session ("Hey, let's pair some guy from Saturday Night Live with a tough-talking African-American and set them after babes on wheels!"), you're right; it doesn't mean, however, that you won't get in a few decent laughs before director Tim (Barbershop) Story's amiable time-killer falls into a steaming pile of would-be blockbuster buddy film cliches. The ever-ingratiating Latifah has long since proved her star charisma, and Fallon does an amusingly offhand parody of failed machismo. They're clearly having a good time together, and you could do worse than their company. There isn't a frame here that isn't cheaply recycled from some other lame action comedy, but if you grit your teeth for the very bumpy ride, you'll come out without too many scratches.--Steve Wiecking

There are some funny moments in this film however after a while I found Queen Latifa character to be a bit annoying and I was not overly impressed with Fallon performance either. Belle Williams has struggled for five years to get her New York taxi licence, so imagine her despair when she picks up an incompetent cop called Washburn, who tries to foil a bank robbery, but ends up getting her into all sorts of trouble, both with the police and her boyfriend. With nowhere to go for the night, she ends up having to sleep over at Washtub's and becomes more involved in trying to stop the bank robbery than she would otherwise have liked. Will she keep her taxi licence, and, more importnatly, her boyfriend? And will Washburn be able to persuade his lieutenant that he doesn't deserve to be given the sack? Queen Latifah stars in this film as ...  Read the complete review

ok with the cast you know full well that its never going to be an oscar winner, but in cast like Jimmy Fallon, who is trying to break into the movies from coming from Saturday Night Live like his previous SNL stars like Eddie Murphy, Chevy Chase, Dan Ackroyd, etc, he mist have thought it was going to be easy, maybe it can be if you have a great story, script and other cast members you can rely on, but unfortunately it fails on all fronts. Its not funny, yes a short film, but still too long, not much story, and dialogue is awful, i assumed they thought that Jimmy could carry it off but he can not. I would pass this film and watch Luc Bessons Taxi instead as this ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Taxi [2004] (DVD): Don't Hail This Cab (1060 words)

A few years back I watched a couple of foreign language DVD's (French) called "Taxi" and the sequel "Taxi 2" by the French writer and producer Luc Besson, who is probably best known for the movie "Leon". (1994) Both were highly amusing comedies that lost little by being subtitled, and indeed I have watched both of them again since then to while away a pleasant couple of hours in front of the old gogglebox. This DVD is a English language remake of the original Luc Besson movie so it was a nap that I was going to purchase and watch the DVD at some stage. As it transpires this was a very bad mistake. The remake was released on ...  Read the complete review

,.-¬*''*¬-.,¸¸,.- Taxi (2004) -.,¸¸,.-¬*''*¬-., After writing my first review in the book section, I decided to try and delve into the DVD section as I haven't actually written any reviews on DVD's even though I have a stack of them lying around. Any tips on making it better would be appreciated. Taxi is a hilarious action film directed by Tim Story, set in and around New York city in America, brought to us by 20th Century Fox. Taxi is an American re-make of the original French "Taxi" created by Luc-Besonn, which was a major hit across France. The film has a 15 rating, the box saying it had ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Taxi [2004] (DVD): No thanks, I'll take a decent cab ride instead (572 words)

This 2004 film is an Americanised remake of a very successful and 'cult' French film that was made in 1998, directed by Luc Besson and starring French comic Samy Naceri. Taking essentially the same plot, this 2004 remake stars Queen Latifah as a cabbie who ends up teaming with inept cop Jimmy Fallon in a bid to bring down a gang of crooks who seem to be robbing banks and then making their getaway in souped up Beamers. This is where Queen's character, Belle, comes in. She has recently become a taxi driver, having spent ages as a bike courier, finally passing the 'test' and upgrading to the traditional yellow taxi cab. The only difference here is that she has ...  Read the complete review
