The direction and photography is fantastic, there is a wonderful scene to imply the passing of time where we see an old bathtub. The camera spins around the tub and every time it spins back to look at it from above the tub is being used for something else... as bath, as a place to wash clothes, to knead bread and as a cot for a baby. There is a sequence involving a pop up book of ‘Little Matchstick Girl’ where we zoom into the book and see the characters ...more |

Taxidermia is the story of the lives of 3 generations of males in a Hungarian family told with the concentration on bodily functions. Each of the 3 sections of the tale are dominated by something to do with the body or a necessity of life… sex, eating and the body itself, with some crossovers between them. The first generation is set during WWII (I think, it’s not made clear but timeline and location would suggest that) out in the middle of nowhere somewhere in middle/eastern Europe. The focus is on a soldier, a batman to his superior, who is obsessed with sex and the flames of a candle. He fantasises about his commanders wife and daughters, spying on them ...
